Why did John and Holly separate?

I wonder if it was a decision early on not to include Bonnie Bedelia a 3rd time as Holly considering how the first 2 films had her character in peril. However it seemed as though things were going rather well between the two of them in the 2nd film and all of the sudden they separate since I guess their marriage was starting to decline.

well it wasnt all of a sudden. there are quite a few years between the two movies.

they obviously had their issues in the first movie and maybe they never really got over that.

Seems a bit random, doesn't it? Some people have suggested that Die Hard With a Vengeance intended to ignore Die Hard 2 and act as the "true" sequel to the first Die Hard. Makes sense if you think about it. In this movie, McClane is back in New York and separated from Holly, and they make no references to the second film. (that I can remember)

Basically Willis was VERY dissatisfied with Die Hard 2, and the fact it would not move on from Die Hard 1.

There is no reference to Die Hard 2 in this movie, and bar the main villain in this movie, Die Hard events are refereed to as "that thing in LA" here and there (though no big deal made of it, which DH2 DID).

Basically DHWAV was viewed as a fresh start with John McTiernan back, and does not get refereed to as Die Hard 3 because that would mean having to acknowledge that its the sequel to Die Hard 2, but they can not deny that it is there, so they try to sweep it to the side.

I think Die Hard 2 has went up in peoples opinions over the years.... I hated it for many years, but since the newer movie came out, its really started to go up in my opinion to where it is my 3/4th favorite of the franchise.

Holly found out John would be returning for the horrendous Due Hard 4.0 and was forced to leave him.

I think they had to put that in since Bonnie wasn't in the film so they had to explain that. Same thing in the fourth film.
