Basically Willis was VERY dissatisfied with Die Hard 2, and the fact it would not move on from Die Hard 1.
There is no reference to Die Hard 2 in this movie, and bar the main villain in this movie, Die Hard events are refereed to as "that thing in LA" here and there (though no big deal made of it, which DH2 DID).
Basically DHWAV was viewed as a fresh start with John McTiernan back, and does not get refereed to as Die Hard 3 because that would mean having to acknowledge that its the sequel to Die Hard 2, but they can not deny that it is there, so they try to sweep it to the side.
I think Die Hard 2 has went up in peoples opinions over the years.... I hated it for many years, but since the newer movie came out, its really started to go up in my opinion to where it is my 3/4th favorite of the franchise.
