Best Rollin Ever?

Now I haven't seen Jean Rollin's entire catalog of work, as it is quite large. but of the ones i have seen, "Les deux orphelines Vampires" stands out as the finest. This film is gorgeous, and instead of focusing on graphic sex and nauseating, cheap gore, this one focuses on telling a fascinating story, with beautiful visuals, and a poetic script. The two main actresses are beautiful and they barely show any skin. And for once, the acting is really fine. and the music score? wow, i wish it was available on cd! I have seen "Fascination" and "Iron Rose," which i believe are considered to be Jean Rollin's finest..but what about "Les Deux Orphelines Vampires?" why hasn't it gotten more praise?? Is it simply the lack of sex and violence?

I believe that's so. A lot of people dumped on The Iron Rose originally as well, and it is in some ways similar to this film (although better; the former is my favorite Rollin film). I think Rollin was kind of forced into a lot of the over-the-top sexuality because the few fans he had at the time got upset when he really tried to do something different. Still, some of his best ones - Rose, The Nude Vampire, Two Orphan Vampires - are his less exploitative.

I haven't seen any other Rollin films except this one and his awful zombie inserts in Virgin Among the Living Dead. While flawed, it was quite enjoyable and I'm surprised by the amount of hate it gets from Rollin fans. I think much of the hate comes from how low-budget the film looks compared to Rollin's classics. From what I can tell, it looks like some Rollin fans are obsessed with good production values (which is why quite a few of them seem to hate Jess Franco's work) but I could be completely wrong.

I think the soundtrack is available on CD.

On second viewing, I don't think "Orphans" is Rollin's best after all, but it is certainly up there. It's a fascinating and beautiful movie. I think i prefer "The Nude Vampire" for it's artistic qualities and off the wall visuals. Incidentally, some of Jess Franco's films are gorgeous, and look like they have nice sized budgets. "Love Letters of A Portuguese Nun" for instance, or "She Killed In Ecstasy" are beautiful.
