Was William Blake (Johnny Depp's character, whose name is based on a famous English poet) a criminal?

Synopsis says he is on the run from the law after murdering a man, but what or how much is that true and did he really kill someone and was it really an act of premeditated murder of someone innocent or did he do it in self-defense against a bad man who "deserved" it?

And if so, is his character basically a hero or a villain or an anti-hero in this movie? Are we supposed to root for his escape and survival or desire for him to face his comeuppance, even if indeed, for the very MOST part, this bizarre and highly surreal metaphorical acid Western that's like a 1990s Jim Jarmusch's answer to Alejandro Jodorowsky's "El Topo" ("The Mole") (1970), is not even about IT or the plot and the lead character's guilt or innocence here as well as if he is a "good" or a "bad" man mostly doesn't matter, and no offense though and OF COURSE the movie isn't encouraging anyone to be "bad" in REAL LIFE either.
