Louanne Johnson

She's gotta be one of the best teachers I ever saw in a movie. It was pleasing how she managed to finally get control of those inner city kids in her classroom. She also clearly showed her determination on making sure they all get their education. She's a hero.

Oh Yeah?

Even though the movie is based on a supposedly autobiographical book, we find out little about LouAnne Johnson herself in this movie. We get the usual tales of teenage angst and woe, but find out barely anything about what motivates the teacher, her pre-teaching life (as a marine for instance)and her failed marriage.

I actually would have preferred learning something more about her and less about the dime a dozen kid stuff we always get in these sort of films.

I get what you mean. I still prefer it this way. Reason being if we were shown more about her past we would anticipate her actions and way of approach. Without knowing her background in detail the movie went on with a dose of surprise in bits and pieces which felt nice in its own way.

But I like the idea of learning her past. At the same time I would have liked to know about these kids future. A part 2 immediately after this may have been a nice addition.
