great movie, but not released due to animal use?

There are some pretty strict laws about killing animals in a film, is this perhaps why this film wasn't distributed in the U.S.?

reply

Well at the end of the movie there is a disclaimer. "Les auteurs et producteurs de ce film tiennent a informer le public de ce que les animaux protagonistes n'ont en aucune facon ete mailtraites." I don't speak French but it sounds like they are denying any harm to animals. While I think that lizard can live without the tail just fine, it seems like that goldfish was dead. So I'm not sure how they can claim no animals were harmed. Or my French is just bad I don't know.

That's it.

if you watch a dvd with English subtitles, you'll see they didn't harm any animals during the filming. There is a statement at the end, before the credits roll.

I haven't seen this film since the mid-90s so I'm a bit hazy on it, but isn't this the film with a particularly vivid graphic shot of a pig being butchered?

reply

There is a scene of a pig being butchered. That does not mean that a pig was killed to create that scene.

Same with the goldfish scene. Just because the fish died in the film, doesn't mean they simply didn't put a drop of red dye on the fish's underside, drop him in the "alcohol," and give the impression that the fish was bleeding.

There are a couple of scenes in the movie with a really strong flashing white light, almost with a stroboscope effect that lasts for several seconds. I think this kind of flashing light can trigger epileptic seizures in some people.
Maybe this put off the release in the USA - could trigger some kind of litigation lol.

This is what I thought. This must be the worst film I have ever seen for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy. I'm not epileptic but those scenes were still affecting me. I forwarded past the second sequence when he was pouring the blue paint on himself.

reply

god, dont watch irreversible if you think the effects in this could trigger epilepsy.... when you load the DVD (for irreversible) they even give you a warning that the producers take no responsiblility for any harmful affects the strobing may cause
