what's the deal with the paint?

that part really gets me, I mean ok I get it, he's high and is just being crazy, but I feel like there's more to it.

just saw the movie, my 2 cents, the big cheese was going to give him crap for messing up the hit but when she saw him covered in paint (just like her son) she had a change of heart and let him go...

yeah man, it´s all about the paint isn´t it. it´s a kind of wierd symbolism thats going on, thruoghout the whole movie. I can´t really get it, but it is very clear, VERY CLEAR. they are all swimming in paint. hehe, it´s great!

this film is heavily symbolic (apparent from the lizards tail scene and the ak-47 scene) and colors play a major role. much of this is in reguards to the main characters descent and submersion into this crime underworld, in my opinion. one other aspect that can be drawn from this is juxtaposition of this character with the ladies son, who covered himself in paint, and later was covered in blood.

The blue paint can be understood as a hommage to Godard´s PIERROT LE FOU. Tran Anh Hung spend a lot of time in France and was very interested in European cinema. He cites not only the Nouvelle Vague film but also Vittoro de Sica´s neorealistic masterpieces SHOE SHINES and BICYCLE THIEVES.
