How gritty and violent is this film?

Hey all,

Been looking for this film for a while now, might have a look on Trademe for a copy. Anyway while I wait I was wondering is this a very gritty film and what kinds of violence is shown?

I mean I'm not a sadist, but I just imagine a film like this being extremely gritty with extreme scenes of brutal and realistic violence, and I cannot imagine any other way the plot would work...correct me if I'm wrong.

It's violent, but more than violent, it's just disturbing. Like, I wouldn't show it to a 12 year old. I first saw it when I was 15 and thought it was the most disturbing thing I'd ever seen. Now my feelings are different. Perhaps this is the "grit" you were referring to...since I don't think anyone's been on this board lately, I am going to have to rewatch the film for a paper I'm writing. Can't remember if
*possible spoiler*

The Cyclo himself winds up killing anyone, which I would love to have an answer to.

Yeah I just got the DVD....

Its not excessively violent, but I agree, it is incredibly disturbing. Its so claustrophobic and dirty, it really is off putting.

Although I did not understand everything, I still think the story was beautiful in its own Eastern Eye way.

Oh and by the way, the Cyclo does end up definately killing one person (with a molotov cocktail) and near the end of the film is sent on a job to kill someone with a pistol, although you don't see what happens, and since he still had the pistol that night (he was told to throw it in the river) and the day after people were saying he 'screwed up', he most likely didn't kill the person.

The main thing I'd like to know is, what happened in the end? You see him driving his family around on a cyclo, but does he go back to being a Cyclo rider? Or does he still work for the madam, since she saved him from getting 'Mr Lullaby's treatment'?

There are also a few bloody stabbings.

True. Although not nearly as violent as in many other films, the stabbings in this seemed pretty offputting. I think it was the dirty atmosphere of the whole thing that really put me off, like.....just how gritty everything was.
