Damn this board

I just watched this based on the positive reviews on this board but what a piece of crap. As far as 1995 box office bombs go, I'll take waterworld any day.

Abide.

reply

It lacked a lot of heart, and was also miscast and misdirected.

Still, it was an ambitious project.

reply

I'm only 21 minutes into this thing and it's pretty clear already that Geena Davis was phoning it in. This movie is painful to watch. I'd also rather watch Waterworld.

I watched CI tonight and Davis did seem kind of subdued for a pirate. I put it down to her simply not having the raw personal oomph to play a character this big and powerful. Most actresses can't play action heroes or great leader types. Remember that lame speech Kristen Stewart gave to the troops at the end of "Snow White and the Huntsman?" That's what Davis is like in this whole movie.

reply

You shouldn't treat Kirsten Stewart as being representative of female actors.

She isn't an actor.

reply

You're a Kirsten Stewart hater? Fine, whatever; I'm not a fan of hers so I don't care.

My point about the average ACTRESS stands though.

reply

I disagree. Women are just underrepresented in those roles in *cinema*.

If you went to theaters and saw stage plays you'd probably see plenty of strong female leads playing strong female leads. It isn't about an inability of women to carry, or deliver, it's about a lack of opportunity, and sale-ability, and thereby a female presence in those roles.

Such characters have a tendency to alienate insecure male viewers, upset the dominant patriarchy, inspire latent misogyny, and perhaps most importantly sell badly at the box office.

History is full of strong male characters, this is safe, quantifiable, pedestrian. Strong female characters are best ignored, unless unavoidable, especially if they threaten males, even tangentially.

reply

Go bore someone else with your dead, stale, feminist dogma.

reply

Go bore someone else with your idiotic misogynist diatribe.

reply

The 'average' male actor can't do what you say most 'actresses' can't...

And so what?

You simply relished a chance to pick on a minority of highly paid female leading actors, and thereby prove some presumed inferiority in the entire female gender.

Based on those few rubbish films you *have* seen like Snow White and The Hunstman.

GW champ.

reply

"Misogynist" is a codeword for anti-male but weak, brainwashed betas
like you will swallow anything the media slops into your heads.

reply

I disagree. She's athletic, strong and funny. She may not come across as a violent, muderous Anne Bonney, but this was a family film.

reply

i think it's good fun.

reply

Funny, this is an excellent pirate movie. I like it better then the 2nd and 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
