This movie was fine

It reminded me of those older Errol Flynn movies, Captain Blood and The Seahawk. At least it didnt have 3d computer ghosts in it like Pirates of the Carribean ;) I liked Pirates of the Carribean but I think this movie was better, the reason it bombed must have been circumstances and culture at the time of the release. Maybe 1995 wasnt ready for swashbuckling and a lady in the lead at that.

I also thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and found it much more compelling than "Pirates . . ." We should start some sort of secret Cutthrought rebirth campain or something -- To me this movie behaves as a classic.

I loved the old pirate movies that were so prevalent in the Golden Age. I kinda of took this movie to be a homage of sorts.

I thought this film was great, the battle scene bit was a tad unrealistic, but its good for what it is.

Good action, great production values, mostly terrible acting and scripting. Even Frank Langella just walks around looking and sounding constipated. The only person who acquits themself well is Patrick Malahide as the evil governor. He's very entertaining.

reply

I would respectfully disagree, Frank Langella put in one of the few saving performances in this movie. This would have been a great movie with better casting for the leading roles.

My Dad watched this shortly after seeing the first Pirates of the Caribean film and he decided he liked this more, I think he has a very good point, was it just the world wasn't ready for this film when it was made?

reply

The lead casting killed this movie. With two decent believable leads this thing could have been a blockbuster.

Just a bump, my IMDB info has been corrupted, and this is the earliest post still showing, even though I was here almost at the inception of the site.

You know I like Cutthroat Island better than the first Pirates of the Carribean as well. Though I think I enjoy Dead Man's Chest a bit better than both.

reply

Cutthroat Island was OK but nothing special, to me anyways.. I did prefer POTC, though

I liked it

yeah i was surprised geena davis was the captain,, but you have to admit the character did a job with it,,, i liked the movie,,
are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

reply

i like it, i think it's good fun. I think a tough female lead was more of a novelty then than now when it has become rather an overworked cliche.
