Liked it until the boat trip part

For me, I enjoyed this movie until they decide to go on a boat trip with strangers to New Orleans. It just felt like they needed to throw something in there to make the movie long enough. I personally felt their friendship developed pretty fast, they could have spent more time earlier in the movie building up to them becoming friends. I feel a kid like Erik would be more apprehensive about hanging out with Dexter at first. He basically just goes over there and they strike up a friendship fast. I feel it would be more powerful if Erik really didn't like Dexter at first and we see a major change in his character. I guess that's just me. The movie got pretty silly and unrealistic for me at the boat trip part. It also just felt like it dragged and wasn't really necessary.

I've said the same thing in another thread but YES.

I've recently rewatched this movie for the first time in years and I am mad at everything that went on with where the story went. Whole movie was great 'til the boat journey. I personally feel that the movie would have been so much better if they stayed at home and stretched the character development a bit there. I thought drinking that flower was a climatic point but then he they decide to go on a boat ride. Sigh. I loved everything about that suburban neighbourhood, the scenery was great, even the way some scenes were shot. There's a whole lot of stories you can tell between neighbours I mean. But they just had to go on a heart-felt boat journey that went no where. Such a wasted setpiece / opportunity for the whole movie.

David Gruisin's score for this movie is really the only high point. It even got nominated for best score at the '96 Grammy's.
