What do you think became of Cher?

I think she went to law school and graduated with honors, and married Josh. And after working for her father for a while and popping out a couple of kids, she discovered that lawyers can make a lot of money in... mediation!

So now she's the top mediator in the LA Basin, and anyone who has a contract dispute or labor dispute or a nasty divorce goes to her, and she uses her brains, her knowledge of the law and her wonderful people skills, to come as close as possible to a solution that makes everyone happy. She's got tons of friends, she's proud of her work, and the only fly in her ointment is that her husband isn't 100% happy that she's earns more than he does, although he is very proud of her.

I think with the help of her father, she got into a good law school and married Josh. Josh and Cher became lawyers and they both live in a fancy home in Beverly Hills, have one daughter and two shih tzu puppies.

I don't think she will be a high powered lawyer, she does not fit the sharp, cynical and tough as nail image, I mean who would hire such a sweet and cute lawyer in a labor dispute?

She will also unlikely to be a house wife because her father has been pushing her to be someone some day.

She can't argue her way out of SAT and her grades are average (C+ to B- range), so ivy league schools are probably out of question.

I agree her ideal jobs are something could employ her people skills, maybe teaching, sales or psychiatry.

One of the things I really liked about the film was that it made the point that at 16, Cher had barely learned how to use her intelligence. I've always presumed that she actually learned how to study when her education got more serious and she couldn't avoid it, while only getting better at working around the rules.

But yeah, she'd suck at criminal law, and would probably be bored by her father's field of contract law. I suggested mediation as a legal field where she could use her top-flight people skills, but she could also be good in the counseling or teaching fields, but not sales. She's too kind for sales. Well, maybe high-end real estate, where she could play house matchmaker.

reply

“Too kind for sales”? Selling is what I do, my friend, beautiful, costly stuff to rich people, and I excel at it because, among other things, I am kind. If you mean that most salespeople are butthats, I wholeheartedly agree, but that’s because they don’t know how to sell. The worst way in the world to sell is by SELLING. The best way in the world to sell is by helping. Those are two completely different kinds of energy, and clients can definitely feel the difference. They are amazed when they meet a sales professional who is actually on their side.

"If you mean that most salespeople are butthats, I wholeheartedly agree"

Why yes, that's exactly what I mean! Most salespeople ARE vile, and they take pride in being so!

Yes, there are people in the profession who really do see their job as playing matchmaker between person and product, and who cultivate a trusting relationship with good clients, and I can see Cher in that role. But I've never dealt with such people myself, probably because such people tend to be concentrated at the big-money end of the field, and I don't have big money.

But FYI I can see Cher in the role of the sort of realtor who's more of a Mansion Matchmaker than a regular salesperson, because I don't think she'll ever really feel the need to make money at any cost like most salespeople (or ordinary human beings). She's always going to be well off.

reply

I can see her becoming a judge. And having her own TV show based on her rulings, a la Judge Judy, but not as stern. But I cannot imagine she would have stayed with Josh after college.

reply

Obviously, Cher went to college and graduated with a degree in poetry.
She didn't marry Josh. As if! But a Black man, a lawyer called Terrance, who she loves dearly. She became a soccer mom of three, not because she had to, but because she wanted to be there for her children the way her mother couldn't be there for her and her father wasn't.
She's happy, duh!
And Dionne is the godmother to two of her children.
