Why does this movie get so much praise?

I recently went back and watched this movie again and I don't know why it gets so much praise. Sure the movie has a killer costume design and it is acted well but the Dialogue is both great and terrible at the same time. Watching it now makes me realise more of the jokes and references they make in the movie but a lot of people younger than me won't know a lot of what they are talking about.

That and the high superficial nature of the movie is pretty annoying. My favourite character in the film is Josh because he is the most "Normal" in the movie and I guess I like Paul Rudd. Don't get me wrong Alicia Silverstone does well as the lead but why is she the only character to get any real growth and development in the film? It also annoys me that a lot of the drama and problems in the film are silly, like diving on the freeway, and the more serious ones are played down and not spoken about like being robbed.

I go into greater detail in a video I made if you care to watch it.

Watching this movie felt different than most other teen movies.

In the beginning when she walks by the painting of her deceased mother and talks about her grades creates a strange atmosphere and depth, tragic/funny/silly ?

When she does her class assignment about immigration her speech takes an interesting spin on the subject.

Yet most of the time she is just a superficial girl trying to be popular and find most stylish clothes.

So no one can say if she is a typical "stupid blonde" or someone sophisticated.
An unusual character in movies.
