While this was sad, it wasn't nearly as bleak as "Fresh"

There were no murders for abnormal and disturbing reasons like "Fresh." It wasn't even as depressing either. There were moments and bonding and fun the investigations were always fun to watch. The scenes with Rocco and Mazelli. However, Rodney saying, "maybe you won't have to take it much longer," always sends makes me sad.

Plus all the glitz and glamour of hip hop pervaded this movie so it was fun to watch. The projects, the vices, the drugs.

"Fresh" was just hardcore.

I felt like "Fresh" was just disturbing altogether.

Both are great and underrated films. What clearly makes "Fresh" so disturbing is the brutal violence against the kids, IMO. The playground scene most certainly makes the whole movie disturbing on its own. The ending was very emotional as well.

Those are both my favorite "hood" films if you will, I think what separates them from other films like Boyz, or Menace is the maturity, and the overall bleak sadness and reality, Clockers soundtrack is amazing Blanchards classical music playing throughout, and the poignant horns playing throughout Fresh, other movies just force the whole Hip hop commercialism.
