Similar Movies

Could anyone tell me some similar movies as to this one?

Just the weird, fantasy type which is similar to this movie.

reply

The first film that comes to my mind "Brazil".

I've spent a lifetime trying to dark fantasy films like this. I haven't found too many...

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Faust (1994)
The Crow (1994)
Delicatessen (1991)
Edward Scissorhands (1990) - not really dark, but a good fantasy nonetheless

old b&w films:
Orphée (1950)
Beauty & the Beast (1946)

btw I definitely agree with george's suggestion: Brazil

Dark City.

Lol, suprised noone had said Dark City before gasteropod did. Although I prefer the Crow personally and I Robot was his first blockbuster, Alex Proyas' Dark City is almost a homage to City of Lost Children. It's almost a brother to it.

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground, try this sig with spinach, yeah!

"The Fifth Element". (From the director of "Leon" Luc Besson and the producers of "City of Lost Children", a nice surreal and cool fantasy Sci-fi comedy)
"Dark City".
"Pan's Labyrinth".
"The Dark Crystal".
"Joey" (a.k.a. Making Contact). (A bizarre and obscure little known 1985 German horror fantasy gem from Roland Emmerich before his hollywood carreer, it's an interesting and dark flick).
"Twice Upon a Time". (A must see animated movie on Youtube)
"The Nightmare Before Christmas".
"Beetlejuice".
"Hellraiser & Hellbound: Hellraiser 2".
"Suspiria".
"Willy Wonka (Both 1971 and 2005 versions)".
"Wizard of Oz".
"Return to Oz".
"The Spiderwick Chronicles".
"Brazil".
"Time Bandits".
"Brothers Grimm".
"Adventures of Baron Munchausen".
"THe Golden Compass".
"Cemetery Man" (a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore).
"Sweeny Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street".

I agree with Dark City and Pan's Labyrinth. Also try The Company of Wolves.

reply

Yes, you should try The Company of Wolves. You may also enjoy "Eraserhead" although its a different style.

And if you really like "fantasy" stuff you should try "Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi" aka "Spirited Away".

I think its hilarious no one has mentioned "12 monkeys"! they even have the same doctors in them i think lol.

other good movies to look at are by the director Tarsem Singh: "The Cell", and his less darker but newer "The Fall"

There have been many good suggestions. Brazil is the fist film that came to my mind.

There are some other films I don't think anyone else has mentioned. Some are real stretches though. Blade Runner depicts a grim city and involves Replicants, created by humans. Artificial Intelligence involves a child robot and some pretty strange cities. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome involves lost children, and a giant and a dwarf. Oliver Twist is about a crime ring that exploits children. And Filini's Satyricon, because it's really weird.

reply

Most of your suggestion are realy bad, especially the large American productions you mentioned DO NOT fit here. You also should not have added pure horror movies like Hellraiser. I have a feeling you either don't understand the OP's question or don't understand the movie itself.

Valid movies are:

-Brazil
-Dark City
-Adventures of Baron Munchausen
-Time Bandits
-Pan's Labyrinth
-Return to Oz (perhaps)

reply

In addition to those already mentioned, I'd add "Labyrinth" and "The Adventures of Baron Munchaussen". I suppose one could even include stuff like "The Science of Sleep" if one wanted. Depends on how similar you want to get.

Anyone who liked this movie should check out this forgotten cult 1985 German supernatural surreal horror fantasy thriller "Making Contact (a.k.a. Joey)", it's an odd "City of Lost Children"-esque dark modern fairy tale about a young boy who lost his father and gains telekinetic/psychic/magical powers to make his world one of wonders and magic in a imagainary world. It later gets turned into a nightmare world when he discovers an evil ventriloquist dummy possessed by a demon with powers like Joey's only stronger as it sends him into a nightmare world where good vs. evil starts.

Watch the heavily butchered english dubbed U.S. version first then the uncut extended German with subtitled version which has a better score and more darkness then the u.s. cut.

"Oh wow, good Nyborg"-Heavy Metal.

Mirrormask.

Serial Experiments: Lain is actually completely different, but it sometimes has a similar... I don't know... mood? I guess?

"Dark City" and the aforementioned "Jasper Morello" come to mind. They're both terrific films.
