This film. It is INCREDIBLE! (first time watcher)

I mean...the music, the visuals, the atmosphere, the characters, and the story...so completely uniquely wonderful. Instant classic, this will be one of those films I will watch again every year or two to reexperience the atmosphere...films like Leon or Memento or 12 Monkeys, my favourites.
Just beautiful in every way. Perlman and Judith were both amazing.

I've always avoided this movie because no one can ever give me a real reason to watch it that isn't completely shallow. Oh, it's pretty? That must make it a great movie!

Have any of you ever tried walking through an art gallery with headphones? You get pretty pictures and music.

Or, if that's too much for you, maybe some MP3s and Google Images.

Wonderful movie.

Everyone has their own opinion and you completely distorted what the OP was trying to say. If you want to form an opinion of your own, that should be enough of a reason to watch it.

... and, yes. There are "pretty" elements in it. Maybe you should focus on the other aspects the OP mentioned, which are not as shallow as it "being pretty".

It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.

"I've always avoided this movie because no one can ever give me a real reason to watch it"

Are you serious? You only watch a movie if someone convinces you it's a good movie? The point of art is for each of us to make up our own minds. If you watch the movie and then hate it, good for you. But at least watch it, if you care enough to jump into a discussion about it.

reply

Yes, there are endless things that I could watch and a fairly short lifespan, so I usually only watch something if it will most likely speak to my soul AND be a good movie.

EDIT

Some exceptions that should be mentioned are...

1) Social watching. I will watch a movie with friends and family, regardless of what it is. That's why I'm watching Big Hero Six tomorrow.

2) If a movie is playing while I'm stuck somewhere, for instance in the E.R. waiting room, I'm not going to close my eyes and plug my ears and run from the room.

I disagree with that strategy because it leaves you with only the popular movies, and popularity by definition means the opinion of the multitudinous masses. There are 1,107 "loved it" reviews for "Titanic" and you can't throw an iceberg without hitting someone who says it's a great movie. But how about the obscure masterpieces like "Denti" (it doesn't even have a plot summary on imdb) or "Talking Head" (again no plot summary). So you end up with movies made for the masses, and you cut off, or "avoid" to use your own words, anything that's not popularly endorsed.

Sometimes you just have to go out and find your own great movies instead of being told where to look.

If you start a thread here legitimately asking why people like this movie, I'll chime in. But the way you approached it here, saying you've already made up your mind to avoid it, and sarcastically jabbing the OP for saying it's beautiful, tells me no one can convince you to watch this movie.

Feel free to link me to your review for this movie and I'll read it.

I'm glad that you mentioned Titanic. See, the difference is that I wouldn't watch Titanic now because the plot doesn't speak to my soul.

Unfortunately, I already saw Titanic back before I came up with this rule.

Keep in mind that Titanic is one of those movies that every single person said was wonderful, so I watched it and it was a waste of time. This movie and Titanic are talked about, by their fans, in a very similar way, except that fans of Titanic occasionally mention something besides the visuals. You could say that Titanic is one of the reasons that I don't want to see this movie.

If I miss a good movie that speaks to my soul while skipping a million overhyped duds, I can live with that. There's more to life, Mr. 535 movie reviews.

I'll pass. I seriously don't think you would like this movie. And yes, I've reviewed 535 movies because I work in the film industry and it helps me keep track of my opinions of films. Good luck, Mr. 1 review.

I'm not going to try to convince you to watch this movie either (no movie appeals to all types and it's no skin off my nose if someone doesn't like a movie that I love)...but I just want to add to the discussion: I have no idea who in their right mind would speak about The City of Lost Children and Titanic in a similar way. I've seen both; Titanic (in my personal opinion--no offense to anyone who loved it) was an insipid over-wrought melodramatic romance set against the backdrop of extremely over-priced special effects that did nothing for me at all. I watched it for free on cable years after it came out and STILL felt ripped off.

The City of Lost Children, on the other hand, was a darkly comic off-beat intelligent film with truly unique characters, a story line that I could never have imagined, acting that was quite wonderful, and a set that was at once dark, cold/damp, carnivalesque AND appeared to be set in a steam-punk nightmare. I saw this film in a tiny theater in San Francisco and I walked out feeling like I was emerging from a dream. This is in my top 10 films of all time.

But by all means, don't waste your time if you don't want to see it. There's no such thing as a must-see movie.

WTF are you talking about DeputyDippity?

I agree it was a fantastic, surreal, emotional film that has bonding with the two main characters which is the little girl and the adult man. He treats the child as his little sister or makes himself as a caretaker for the child, while the little girl see's him as a father like-figure or or guardian. I think Miette has a crush with 'One' which is adorable, children have crushs with adults.
