I'm not going to try to convince you to watch this movie either (no movie appeals to all types and it's no skin off my nose if someone doesn't like a movie that I love)...but I just want to add to the discussion: I have no idea who in their right mind would speak about The City of Lost Children and Titanic in a similar way. I've seen both; Titanic (in my personal opinion--no offense to anyone who loved it) was an insipid over-wrought melodramatic romance set against the backdrop of extremely over-priced special effects that did nothing for me at all. I watched it for free on cable years after it came out and STILL felt ripped off.
The City of Lost Children, on the other hand, was a darkly comic off-beat intelligent film with truly unique characters, a story line that I could never have imagined, acting that was quite wonderful, and a set that was at once dark, cold/damp, carnivalesque AND appeared to be set in a steam-punk nightmare. I saw this film in a tiny theater in San Francisco and I walked out feeling like I was emerging from a dream. This is in my top 10 films of all time.
But by all means, don't waste your time if you don't want to see it. There's no such thing as a must-see movie.
