Steampunk

I'm watching this right now and I have to say this is the closest I've ever seen a live action movie coming to getting steampunk right. The Hellboy movies came close, but City of Lost Children's overall style trumps that.

Too few airships me thinks. But I see what you mean.

True, that. Makes you realize how inept "Wild Wild West" was in its portrayal of steampunk.

every steampunk movie i've ever seen (or at least steampunk elements" had ron pearlmen in it. hellboys movies, city of lost children, and mutant chronicles. the only steampunky movie that didn't have ron in it that i know is the asylum's sherlock holmes and thats only steampunk at the end when sherlock holmes uses a mechanical hot air balloon to shoot down a mechanical dragon.

What about Vidocq? The Golden Compass? Jasper Morello?

This is more Diesel Punk, though, than steampunk. SP deals more in victorian-era steam things [well, obviously on that part, I suppose]; A stylized version of the 1880's.

The artistic stylization for CoLC is roughly WWI - 1920's -- Art Deco, dirty diesel workings, early modern technology.

Diesel punk's not terribly common, but certainly does well where applied.

In film, Julie Taymor's adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus had a lot of diesel punk influence; as well as Alex Proyas's Dark City.

And in video games, Final Fantasy VII on Playstation was largely diesel punk, especially in Midgar; also Bioshock fits well in the dieselpunk setting. [Dieselpunk is sometimes also called Decopunk for its heavy use of Art Deco, certainly showcased best in Bioshock which used Deco as its main design motif.]

Diesel Punk? So now there are sub-genres of sub-genres? I don't know if that's necessary. The movie doesn't mention Diesel anywhere. I'd say it's Steampunk with a strong Art Deco influence (particularly from the late 20's to the late 30's).

Does City of Ember qualify? I like that one even if it's a bit "kiddie."

Come with me if you want to live.
