Richard is SO annoying!

I can not stand Richard in this movie. He pretty much ruined the whole movie for me. He's an annoying doofus and NOT funny, at all. I want to punch him and rip his huge mole off his face!
They should have cast someone else to play that character....this guy sucks!

The character was written to be an annoying doofus and Richard Thomas brought that very well. It wouldn't have been right to cast someone that is likeable because he isn't supposed to be likeable, at the start anyways.

I'm watching it now and I agree, his character is a jerk. Everything is a joke to him. I would have enjoyed the movie more if his obnoxious behavior was toned down a bit.

Thomas isn't exactly known for subtle.

I find he tends to over do it in most of the roles he attempts.

Not my favorite actor.

It's just his character. Chill.

I guess I'm the only person on this thread who actually liked him. I found him funny and laughed at his little spats with Mary.

I found him funny at times too. Annoying but funny. The answer to the first gift of Christmas being a tie gets me every time.

I get his joking with Mary. My grandmother was similar to her. Very prim and proper. She too always gave bits of information that I didn't want to hear at times. I think his joking was to get her to lighten up.

He's a hot, sexy babe who doesn't age. I kept thinking how good he looked in this movie, as well as Maureen O'Hara- she always was so attractive.

Yes. His character is annoying and Richard Thomas played it well. The book is better. He is nothing like this in the book.
