Films not mentioned

I caught this documentary on tv late one night & really loved it. I wondered why certain films weren't mentioned though, particularly 'Different from the Others' (1919), a German silent which is pro-homosexuality and features the first explicitly gay character in cinema. It was made as an 'Enlightenment Film', the whole point of which was to get public support to strike down Germany's laws against homosexuality. The film is frankly more progressive than a lot of what you see today- it's preachy to be sure, but says explicitly (in intertitles) that homosexuality is natural, not a sickness or evil, and that people should have equal rights regardless of their sexuality. It also starred Conrad Veidt (just a few months before he became an international star with 'Caligari'), who gives a wonderful sympathetic portrayal of a gay man being blackmailed over his sexuality.

I know 'Different from the Others' isn't exactly mainstream, but I would expect a film historian to be aware of it, as well as others like 'Sex in Chains', 'Michael', etc (can't recall if 'Madchen in Uniform' was in). Or did I just miss the point- was it supposed to be only Hollywood film? Like I said, it was late at night & a few years ago, so maybe I'm mis-remembering the purpose of the film.

At any rate, I strongly recommend checking out 'Different from the Others' (available through Kino- www.kino.com, and I believe it's also on youtube) for anyone interested in this subject!

This seems to be a great movie. I'll look for it.
Another one that was not mentioned was "Pandora's Box", a Louise Broks vehicle from 1929. There is Countess Anna, who wants to dance with Lulu, and is considered the first lesbian in a film.
Maybe they missed these movies because they were focusing in the English language, not foreign movies.

The film was about US/hollywood films, so of course it wouldn't be mentioned.

It was about Hollywood.

But they did talk about british films. I also thought it was odd that Different from the others weren't mentioned when Victim from 1961 was.

Don't tell me, it's no use to me. Tell yourself if you want to but don't tell me.

They just mention, and you can infer they were talking about movies that came out to a larger audience, had famous actors or were made by acknowledged filmmakers, Victim would fit that profile, but not Different from Others.
