How did Casper die?

Been awhile since I've seen this movie.. I remember he was out playing in the snow until it was dark, then got sick. I assume it was more than a cold? Pneumonia maybe? Was it ever revealed?

reply

I presume it was hypothermia.

It was pneumonia. Hypothermia is more of an acute death -- you get very cold and die within hours. Casper describes being sick for awhile -- clearly pneumonia.

It bugs me when people confuse hypothermia with pneumonia. They are no where near the same thing. Hypothermia is when your body temperature is VERY cold. Pneumonia is when you have fluid in your lungs caused not by the cold, but by a bacteria. So assuming his sledding story was accurate, he died of hypothermia.

Uhh yeah, thanks for the lesson. I'm actually in my 2nd year of medical school. I didn't say the pneumonia was caused by the cold. It is a common complication of a minor infection like a cold virus. Cold weather aids the development of pneumonia by increasing aspiration of mucus into the lungs. Have you really never noticed that pneumonia infections increase greatly during the winter?

Plus, if Casper died of hypothermia, it would be extremely unlikely that he would remember "getting sick".

reply

I've gotten pneumonia thrice and every time it was in the coldest part of the winter following some kind of infection (once the common cold and twice the flu). Being cold for a long time with common cold or other infections can lead to pneumonia very easily. It must have been a long time ago that he died though since it's quite easy to treat with the right antibiotics... like I said I've had it thrice and I'm still kicking, the only thing that happened was I developed asthma...

When Casper starts to remember his past life, and is telling Kat about it, the newspaper clippings shown afterwards say "pneumonia takes the life of 11 yr old" or something like that.

No, the pneumonia is just a coverup. this is how he really died!

"The 1995 feature film Casper, however, revived the notion that Casper was a deceased human and provided a brief account of his death. According to the film, Casper was a young adolescent who went sledding all day and died of pneumonia."

Wasn't hypothermia, really was pneumonia.

It makes Me wonder who died first Casper or his Uncles. If Casper died first, do you think Stretch, Stinky & Fatso locked him outside in the cold? They were pretty heartless.

Yes Capser died of pneumonia in the film. And I believe it was stated this his Uncles died first, even indicated that they probably died a while before him. They don't say how or even whether they were all at the same time.

Title is spoiler.
