DeNiro as Jewish - why?

We saw it in Once Upon a Time in America, and we see it again in this movie - Robert DeNiro plays a Jewish mobster. But how come he gets cast as that? He is not Jewish, he does not look Jewish, and neither movie even addresses religion (some slurs here and there in this movie, but it is by no means a plot). So why is it important to establish that DeNiro plays a Jewish character?

If they wanted the main character to be Jewish, why didn't they cast a Jewish actor? Or, if they wanted Robert DeNiro to play the main character, why did they make him Jewish in the script?

Just something I found peculiar. Feel free to explain, agree or disagree.

It's no big deal.

The character is Jewish. The director wanted Bob for the part, it's as simple as that.

But the issue of Judaism doesn't get raised in the movie at all. Why do they even make him Jewish?

In The Godfather, we are dealing with the Sicilian mob in New York, and they make a huge deal out them being Sicilian - we get the backstory from Sicily, they speak Italian on occasions, and they travel to Sicily at least four times. In this movie, we are told that he is Jewish, and that's it. It seems kind of a pointless notion to point out that a character is Jewish, if you are not going to use that fact for something in the movie at all.

reply

Because the character Ace is based on, Frank Rosenthal, was Jewish. And as for Deniro not looking like an ethnic Jew, neither was the real Rosenthal. He was adopted by a Jewish family.

reply

Also, I'm glad they kept Rothstein as a jew, otherwise we may have missed out on the hilarious wisecracks from Pesici concerning their faith.

sth78, would it have made you felt better if he had been from Miami, wore Hawaiian shirts with gold chains and constantly doled out financial advice to everyone? Or if his wife had been dressed like Peggy Bundy, constantly complaining in restaurants with a nasal whine, trying to get stuff for free?

reply

Actually, Rosenthal and spilitro met and consummated their friendship out of North Miami Beach, not Chicago or Vegas

reply

But James Caan doesn't come off as being Sicilian looking at all to me either. I personally think they should have cast another actor with a more distinct Italian/Sicilian look to them. He's really the only piece of casting in that film which I have trouble with.

Deniro plays ethnic well. Always has.

The OP doesn't seem to realize that the characters are based on real people.

reply

There was nothing wrong with his acting; I agree completely that he plays well, in this one as in nearly every movie he has been in. I was just wondering why he seems to get typecast as Jewish gangsters, when he has nothing to do with Judaism. Once Upon A Time In America also has him portraying a Jewish mobster.

He was chosen becuase he is a great actor. End of story!!!!!!!!

is this thread for real?

reply

As real as the Highlander-thread questioning why a Frenchman was cast as a Scotsman and a Scotsman as an Egyptian. Or, for that matter, why Brad Pitt was cast to play a Jewish character from the American South (???) in Inglourious Basterds.

It is not a criticism of DeNiro's acting, only a matter of lacking authenticity, when actors are cast to play ethnicities that they clearly not are themselves. Isn't that a reasonable question to raise?

reply

Slick, after Goddfellas with the obvious partnership with pesci the director wanted the two of them for Casino.

That the character was Jerwish wasn't a stumblign block.

You are an idiot.
Why does this topic awake so many emotions, especially anger, in some people? I thought it was fair enough to ask why an Italian-American like Robert DeNiro is portraying Jews in movies.

reply

"he does not look Jewish"

Robert De Niro has a hooked nose, brown eyes, and dark hair. He looks a lot closer to a Jew in phenotype than he does to a Nordic Aryan Norwegian.

reply

So Scorsese could toss in his minimum of one anti jewish slur per film.

Duh.

reply

The real life man Ace was based on, Frank Rosenthal, was Jewish. Scorsese didn't just make up a Jewish character so he could work slurs into the film.

reply

I was just lampooning some of his critics who thinks Scorsese uses slurs in his films just to be edgy.

I'm not one of them, but I guess I could see why they'd think that way.

Some of Charlton Heston's most famous characters were Jews, yet he wasn't. He also played Hispanic. Marlon Brando wasn't Italian, yet he was the Godfather. James Caan, a Jew of German descent, played Catholic Italian-American Sonny Corleone. I'm watching Everybody Loves Raymond right now and I think Ray Romano is the only one on there who's really Italian. How about Jerry Stiller on King of Queens? How about when white actors play Othello? See where I'm going with this?

Because he plays a great Jew. He's got everything down.

reply

"He is not Jewish".

Yeah and De Niro's not a mob related casino manager, either. It's called acting. Pretending to be somebody else. Make-believe.

"He does not look Jewish".

Jews come in all shapes and sizes - including blonds, for instance.

"Neither movie even addresses religion".

What's that got to do with anything. He's a Jew by ethnicity, not religion.
