We read the novel by Naguib Mahfouz in my Arabic Lit class. I really enjoyed seeing it adapted to an entirely different setting. They changed/omitted/ combined some characters and simplified/altered some key plot points. Overall, really neat to see the book realized through film. Despite all the changes, I think that it managed to stay pretty true to the novel.

I got the book and film together! I will re-read the arabic and watch the Mexican adaptation. i think the movie is crap, i didn't read the novel but i'm sure it's much better. the movie is all ugly old people screw young ones, mahfouz is deeper than that.
