was that a real rat?

That rat that was beheaded. Was that a real killing? I'm aware some animals (like the one stomped on in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) are not protected under whatever law there is against hurting animals in a film, and rats are considered, like cockroaches, to be pests.
Good God, please tell me that wasn't a real kill.
