Wow seems like you are a huge fan of the romance genre because you just missed Moulin Rouge and Wuthering Heights.

I read all your list and the ones I was going to suggest are already there .

so because I couldn't help you as much as I wanted I will tell you my favorites of your list

1 the English Patient like I've said many times what they did was wrong especially because Geoffrey was a very kind guy who adored Katherine but when we see that Almasi loved her as much as Geoffrey and things got better because she had same feelings for him, you can't help rooting for their love.

Somewhere in time
Wow looking for a way to go back in time just to meet the woman he loved its incredibly romantic, Loved that film and the chemistry between Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was really beautiful.

The Notebook
A romance that started when they were very young till they really grew old together, it's surprising to a see a good romantic story coming from Nicholas sparks.

Titanic
What makes this film special is the very good chemistry between Leo and Kate and their iconic moments together.

The ill fated Victorian romance in Possession is heart wrenching. I love that movie as much as Bridges of Madison County.

"To wives and sweethearts - may they never meet."

reply

Sense & Sensibility (Lee)
Open Hearts (Bier)
The Piano (Campion)
The Age of Innocence (Scorsese)
In the Mood for Love (Wong)
Dangerous Liaisons (Frears)
An Affair to Remember 1957 (McCarey)

reply

So agree with the age of Innocence though it has one of the most frustrating endings, don't you think?
My first thoughts after the ending were
Is this for real?

I also loved Dangerous Liaisons, interesting also with Michelle Pfeiffer as the leading actress, though her part here is very different.
Here she is the perfect wife Material and is very conservative, meanwhile in the Age of Innocence she is more like the Marquise De Merteuil less the evil part hehehhe.

Seems like you love Big Dramatic Romances with Gossip and complications but always very stylish with gorgeous costumes. Personally I do.

reply

Oh yes, the ending left me short of breath. The story line with May getting pregnant and all... And the last scene. Please, go up to the apartment... what are you waiting for?! But he doesn't, it was soooo frustrating!

You know, there're love films and then there're love films. 'You've got mail' and others vs. 'The Age of Innocence' and 'Dangerous Liaisons'. Those films who'll be stucked with you forever. It's quite some times since I watched it but I still remember the scene betwween Newland and Ellen, they sit together in a buggy and he slowly takes of her glowe. It's one of the most erotic, passionate scenes ever. I simply love it. Daniel Day-Lewis is brilliant. So is Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder.

'Dangerous Liaisons' is very different although I really like it too, very stylish with gorgeous costumes. It seemed that Michelle Pfeiffer was in every other movie during the 90's, haha. She's really good in DL, your description of the two characters are spot on.

Yes, I love these kind of movies. Drama, romance and complications, oh yes. And substance. Most of all substance. But I also like 'Open Hearts', the total opposite of TAOI, costume wise. It's a dogme film by Susanne Bier, a beautiful and heartbreaking movie with a fantastic Danish cast. If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend it!

I know, you feel horrible for Newland because he was close to leave May but then sacrifices everything for the family they were gonna have, but that last scene is something you can't believe just happened.

I couldn't agree more, there are romantic that will always be remembered and loved those are love which have a special something which separates them from the bunch

I made a list which I'd love you to check and give me your thoughts on it: I called High Quality Romantic Films which makes honor to those romances which are more than just a chick flick.

Hey thanks for your compliments on my comparison between Ellen and Madame de Tourvelle about Michelle she was one of the it girls of the 90s or should I say woman of the 90s ? because on that decade non of hot actresses looked like Jennifer Lawrence or Leighton Meester does, even Natalie Portman looks like she is in her very early 20s when she is in her early 30s.

Sorry for going so out of topic.

Hehe me too, which girl doesn't like a good Romantic Drama, the romance feels stronger and more passionate in the drama Form or at least that's what I feel.
Don't get me wrong i still like a good Romantic Comedy but dramas always feel more real lol.

Thanks for suggesting Open Hearts I will definitely check open hearts.

Hi sarizonana!

I just want you to know that I didn't forget you. I've had no time to look at you list, although I can see it's a great one and thoroughly done. I will look at it tomorrow and get back to you.

reply

Thanks
It's ok . whenever you can ill be happy to know what did you think of it.

Romance it's one of my favorite genres along with Biopics and Historical films.
I don't know why but I find those very interesting and intriguing.

reply

Absolutely sarizonana, which girl doesn't like a good romantic drama! Or man for that matter. I've had a joyful time when I've read your list. It's a great one, worked out thoroughly, with references such as Oscar nominations, AFI and especially your personal favourites. You've got most of the 20th Century's most popular romantic dramas on your list.

I like the way you give each movie space, more than one page. That's actually something I haven't seen before here on IMDb. The idea of giving each film about 2-3 pictures/pages makes the reader more interested and especially if one hasn't seen the film. I really like it, it's beautiful pictures you've chosen for each film, captures the mood and atmosphere. It certainley woke up the curiosity in me to actually watch it or rewatch.

Also the fact that you haven't seen all of them, first I thought it was a little odd that you had included them on the list, but after reading I realize that it's a humle way to show your respect to what have been Oscar nominated but also those which have been suggested by IMDb posters as their personal favourites.

You have to watch Gone With the Wind, Casa Blanca and An Affair to Remember! Those are absolutely classics! Sound of Music! Love it, I'm not sure how many times I've seen it. 20?

You've given me great suggestions sarizonana, I'll definitely watch The Note Book, Young Victoria and Silver Linings. Thank you for having me watch, I really enjoyed it!

reply

Thanks so much for your compliments, I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

My idea of the two pictures for film I don't remember where I got it from but I guess it was surfing the lists here and I thought two pics for film would give the list a more unique touch, thanks again for telling me that you liked that.

The idea of adding to each one all those reference was point out why it isn't your typical cheesy chick flick and what makes it different from the Twilight Saga and yes I added the films which I haven't seen because well some I've heard a lot from them like Gone with the Wind and Casablanca or because I know no one suggest me great romances like other movie lovers.

So yes it a sign of respect to every artist who created those masterpieces in romance, I've been thinking to make this list to 100 high quality Romances.
So maybe I'll add the other Wuthering Heights with Lawrence Olivier and Merle Obreron since that one is the classic one and probably I'll add Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet.

So check my list again soon and give me your thoughts on my additions.
And really send me private messages I always answer.

The Prince of Tides. For me it's up there with Bridges.
Go watch that movie, there's a scene that will remind you of Francesca in the truck.

reply

That's a great film as well though its a more logical don't you think?

In Prince of Tides both knew it was an affair that was gonna end at some point and Nick Nolte's character did love his wife and was happy the decision he made of going Back to His Wife and Barbara Streisand even tough she loved this man I felt she did get over it.

And was smart to leave her jerk husband no matter what would have happen with the other guy at the end, there were not hurt feelings in that film.

Meanwhile Francesca just stayed because of Routine, The Bridges of Maddison County is more like the English Patient.

reply

- Brief Encounter (Lean)
- One From The Heart (Coppola)
- Last Tango In Paris (Bertolucci)
- The English Patient? (Minghella)

Good lists.

The End of the Affair, with Ralph Fiennes, Julianne Moore, and Stephen Rea is excellent.

Also, Desire (alternate title The Salt on Our Skins).

Strictly Ballroom.

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Terrible title, good romantic movie.
