Where'd her dog go?

After the husband and kids leave for the fair,a dog comes in the kitchen to be petted and talked to by Francesca. You never see the dog again. A woman alone,a strange man approaches the house,spends time at the house,where's the family dog? I guess it's a dog that stays away all the time and never needs to be fed? Why introduce the dog in the first place?
