'Go back to Pakistan'

What was that about? it's near the beginning of the film when Whoopi Goldberg’s character has just met Robyn ... or maybe it was after she got sacked from that bar... can't remember but it's near the beginning and she has some kind of argument with a taxi driver (I think he nearly goes into her) and she yells, 'go back to Pakistan!' now, I can kind of see why this is in there - just because she's a black lesbian doesn't mean she's immune to prejudice and it shows her as a bit of a live wire so I guess it was a good thing but it seemed a little odd to me. Any thoughts, anyone?

i believe it was just showing how strong willed she is...it was the scene right after she got fired from the bar...i dont think it was odd, but a sly way by the writers to show how loud mouthed she is or as you put it a live wire...

It really stood out for me too. I only came to the conclusion that ten years ago more people thought that was a normal thing to yell at a cab driver. But, on the other hand, it shows she has a nasty side and it adds depth to the character that she isn't some noble figure. In the end, the characters all have some pretty bad flaws.

There was another part where the bartender makes a comment about Jane's girlfriend's daughter along the lines of, "can you believe a body like that on a 12 year old?" !!! That was another weird thing stuck in there. I assume that we are just supposed to understand that they are flawed characters along the "you wind up with whoever is there" theme.

A lot of men say shit like what the bartender said.
