Did anyone notice the cab driver, Earl, is doing a baaaaad Christopher Walken-y voice thing? Cause that's the first thing I noticed since starting to watch this movie five minutes ago...
shareYou obviously didn't "get it". It was "schtick", a joke. About 10 minutes into the film, he's sitting in his cab alone; he looks at himself in the rear-view mirror and talks to himself, obviously "practicing" the Walken thing.
Just like white suburban boy "wiggas" strut around talking like Afro-American gangsta's to act tough, Earl did a "Walken". It was a joke. (Just like white suburban boys using ebonics...:))
I guess I missed that part, too. I got the impression that Earl was an Eastern-European immigrant of humble degree who was attempting to speak English as he'd seen it in American films.

That's just his voice. He isn't really "doing" anyone. He was born in Portugal and raised in Toronto. Hence the accent.
shareActually he was talking like Walken as a schtick. There are moments in the film where he does not speak like that at all. I have never heard anyone from Toronto or Portugal even remotely sound anything like that.

No, but seriously... he was totally attempting to do a Walken impression and it was awful. I think the character was supposed to be doing it on purpose, though. The character is just sort of an ass and has a few screws loose.
You're absolutely right, he was clearly doing the "are you looking at me?" Taxi Driver schtick at one point in the film (when he was looking into the taxi rear view mirror while alone in the cab).
As for his accent, I'm not sure about that. At first I thought it was suppposed to be a Quebecois accent, but it didn't really sound Quebecois or French, so pretty soon I thought it must be an eastern Eurpoean accent of some description, though there didn't seem to be any explanation of his origins or why he was speaking with that accent.

Is that what that was supposed to be? Because it was damned annoying and almost ruined the movie for me. But if that is the case, why does he keep it up while flipping out in Boya's bathroom after realizing he's a vampire? Personally think it's just terrible acting.
