Why would the Burmese care if their people fled anyway?

Why would they waste time even trying to stop/kill Burmese people from fleeing Burma?? Isn't that fewer people for them to worry about?

Or do they simply want them to stay so they can have prisoners/slaves?

It's all about control. The generals want to control bodies, minds heart and souls. They do the equivalent of excommunication if a Burmese marries someone not Burmese. When we lived there our son wanted to marry a girl called Nwe Nwe who worked in our local shop. Her parents wouldn't allow it as they would have been punished, so would Nwe Nwe, and the govt wouldn't have allowed her to leave the country anyway. And, of course, we would have been chucked out and never allowed back in.
