What do people think is offensive about this movie?

I've seen several reviews labeling this movie as offensive, and I couldn't understand why. Can someone please enlighten me?

reply

Have you ever seen this movie?

It's about Tommy Lee having to fight a bunch of morons ....Aryan Nation/Klan/White Supremacy group.

They like to torture anybody that's not like them.

Tommy Lee has a run in with them and by the end of the movie he has kicked all their butts.
Not the best of The Best of The Best series.

I have seen it, yes. I don't understand what's supposed to be offensive about it. The villains are subhuman scum and deserve everything they get.

reply

Are you from the USA?

The subhuman scum are offensive NOT the movie.

The scum represented everything that is hated by normal people...they were Aryan/KKK/White Supremacist....nobody likes them....they are pure evil & follow the principles of Hitler! They believe if "you aren't white you aren't right" & should die.

I found this movie rather offensive for the opening sequence, where a black preacher is brutally beaten by a baseball bat by white supremacists. This sequence is a very ugly scene and really has no business in a martial arts flick. It was also filled with attempted rape sequences, racial slurs every 5 minutes and the film is also boring as all hell. Anyway, I'm one of the few reviewers to find this flick offensive. So if you want to discuss, I'm willing to discuss such with you. As I respect your opinion Aloep.

If you know anything about Phillip Rhee and read why he made this movie then you would understand the racism in the film.

He made this movie after reading about high school students laughing at Schindler's List. It bothered him that they couldn't relate to the movie.

Phillip wanted to communicate to the kids & adults an important message where they could relate to it....in one of his movies.

"I'll give them action & inject the philosophies," he says. "When kids see this movie they will understand that hate is not the answer. We all have problems, but you can't kill people over them."

He has also said he made this movie because of the racial stereotyping people have done of him because he is Korean.

Best of The Best III brings the character of Tommy Lee from the tournament arena into the arena real life. Tommy does not just use his martial arts to confront & destroy bad guys. Instead, he confronts barriers of racial hatred & intolerance. The martial arts are used for self defense for the good of humanity.
Rhee is living proof that prejudice need not hold you back. He experienced difficulties & intolerance on his own road to success. His reaction was to be positive, try hard & have faith. He did not condemn others nor blame them for his trials & difficulties. Instead, he viewed the situations as challenge to, to perservere through, & to overcome.

@ Jude Deveraux:

That's a really interesting anecdote and bit about Phillip Rhee's motivations. I applaud him for overcoming his struggle with racism and I think his aim was good, but I think the final product fell short.

I have to agree with the other poster that a cheezy 90's martial arts flick shouldn't really deal in subject matter like this. And if it does, it has to be way more well executed than this.

I don't think there's anything wrong with injecting philosophy and depth into action, in fact, I think it should be done more often! But in a general, non-specific way that can affect and improve everyone's lives.

This movie takes a real, painful subject and paints it with a broad stroke in a clumsy way. I really wouldn't be shocked if real victims of bigotry and hate had a problem with this movie.

I think they did a pretty good job, even if it was silly at the end, but then I've never really been a victim of bigotry and hate, so I'm not sure if my opinion counts 

Very good. But brick not hit back!

I may guess it may also have to do with this movie coming out around the same time Oklahoma City bombing took place.

If you remember the mid 90s, Neo Nazi and White militant groups were making a big buzz and the bombing nail it with a exclamation point. I mean even Chuck Norris also did a movie dealing with Neo Nazi and terrorism. It was a big subject matter back at the time.

But this movie I feel bought everything into perspective in showing how dangerous these groups really are, even if it was just a action flick.

I completely agree, I thought it was very good, especially it's message.
