Would it have mattered if Schumacher did Year One?

Was the timing right? would it fit within the timeline of the first film? would had been any better than Forever or B&R?

reply

As long as the studio didn't pressure him to make another kiddie film it could have been OK (doubt it would have been great though).

I don't think it would've been 100% better without studio meddling, it would've been a disaster due to Schuamcher stunt casting actors.

As Max Landis said when you doing a comic book movie there gonna be lots of cooks in the kitchen.

reply

Think it would've been confusing right after Returns since the first film was his first year as Batman, Returns already done Catwoman and I think audiences just wanted a sequel.

It was a problem with the Amazing Spiderman movies, doing anther origin film so soon after the Raimi films.

reply

A big part of the Year One story is Batman gaining the trust of Gordon so that would have been inconsistent with B89 and the audiences wouldn't have been ready (and still might not be ready) for a superhero film where he only battles ordinary criminals and mobsters rather than also a costumed villain (although it could have been interesting to have seen the Scarecrow as Batman's first villain as eventually did sort of happen). It would also probably be hard to have a superhero film without a love interest.

reply

Agreed.

And they had ready did Catwoman so that would have too confusing.

Schuamcher saying he wanted to do it but couldn't made it feel like he was a few installments behind to where people are with the series. Beyond the studio pressure and toy company involvement Schumacher just comes off as somebody who was really a step behind with what audiences and studio wanted.

reply

Since 89 was early years think there was little point in doing it.

reply

Would it had been boring if he just fought ordinary criminals and mobsters in a film?

Trespass was directed by Kidman’s Batman Forever director, Joel Schumacher. Ever since Batman and Robin, Schumacher had struggled. Every movie he has made since seems like an effort to prove he is not a campy director. Every film is so dark and gritty, they feel like snuff films.

Part of year one's appeal was that it showed batman viewed as a true vigilante with Gordon the first cop to trust him. Since 89 Batman contradicts that, it wouldn't have worked fitting year one into that series (even Gordon himself seems to see Batman for the first time in that film). There were far too many things they couldn't have done with a prequel in that series hence why it wouldn't have worked.

reply

Also it had Catwoman when they already did her in Returns and no costumed villains.

Prequels weren't commonplace at the time until Star Wars.

Not many people care if he did Year One because it doesn't fit into the continuity of 89. Does feel like Schumacher was a few installments behind or pitched it at the wrong place at the wrong time. At the time people just wanted a sequel with a different villain like Riddler or Two Face. Kinda shows Schumacher may not have done any better.

reply

Think Schumacher was just using Year One as a excuse to prove he can do a dark Batman or make himself sound important. I don't think he cares if Year One fits in the series or if fans wanted to see it, it was just his favorite story he wanted to do.

reply

In order to fit the continuity of the Burton films, some changes would have needed to be made even if the studio didn't interfere. For example, a lot of "Year One" focuses on Commissioner Gordon, and in BATMAN (1989) he didn't even know Batman existed until that night at Axis Chemicals. Not to mention Catwoman was a supporting character, but she didn't come about until BATMAN RETURNS.

It would've been too soon for a prequel or reboot especially two installments in and audiences just wanted a sequel with a different villain.

With the changes that needed to made it would be barely like Year One apart from Bruce's botch attempts at crime fighting before he dons the suit, we could've ended up with something like Zero Year with him battling the Riddler in his first year as Batman. In 89 he'd only been Batman for like a month and didn't have Gordon dealing with police corruption.

I don't think it was really important or really mattered if the third film was Year One.

reply

It was at a time were prequels and reboots were not commonplace in Hollywood so there was no chance of Year One happening anyway.

reply

Would Schumacher ignored 89 and Returns entirely?

reply

Think Schumacher didn't really care if Year One fit into the Burtonverse at all it was just a story?

reply

There is something about prequels/reboots being away for many years where people's interests get percolated.
