If Burton made Batman Forever

the movie would have been better than Schumacher's version.

reply

Billy Dee Williams as Two Face.

reply

Maybe it would have been, maybe not. This is still one of my all-time favorites.

Annoying the world since 1960!

reply

Seconded.

All for a box of chocolates...

I heard ages ago Brad Dourif was supposed to be the Scarecrow. I'd take all that. Fantastic actor.

reply

Agreed. Dourif would be creepy as heck as Scarecrow

reply

Oh, I could DEFINITELY see Dourif as Scarecrow. My original choice was Anthony Perkins.

reply

Wow never thought about Dourif as the Scarecrow but that would be awesome. Murphy still did well in all 3 films.

I don't think Dourif was ever rumoured to play the scarecrow in Batman Begins but rather the canceled fifth film which would have been helmed by Joel Schumacher.

This is what I originally meant, but I think the movie was still supposed to be the third one, by Tim Burton. There are still those leaked concept arts floating around online, although I only remember B.D.Williams from them!

reply

The actor rumored to play Scarecrow in Batman Triumphant was Nicolas Cage. In fact, it was more than just a rumor. Schumacher himself stated in an interview that Cage agreed to play the character. I've never heard of Brad Dourif being rumored

Joel Schumacher was going to direct again and Harley Quinn was going to be the 2nd villain.

reply

It would have been loads better.

It would have been the perfect trilogy.

To have Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, stripped from office for links to Max Shreck, and then mobbed in the street and eventually disfigured in an acid attack.

To have Robin Williams as the Riddler, the super intelligent and once prominent TV quiz show presenter, becoming less relevant as ratings are down, in part due to news channels constant showing of Batman. Eventually losing everything and going insane.

Marlon Wayans as Robin, in a very similar fashion to what they did in Forever. Himself losing everything, he also starts to turn towards crime, and whilst attempting to rob Wayne manor is recruited by Batman.

Then bring back Catwoman as the romantic lead.

Have it be a three hour epic of fantastic character study, have Bruce finally find himself a family. Have Catwoman return to save Bruce half way through. Have Dent and the Riddler nearly kill Robin. Have Harvey realise his errors, and finally help Batman take down the Riddler.

It would of ended the trilogy perfectly.

They could have even made a prequel, showing us how Wayne becomes Batman, with a Wayne Enterprises scientist going insane off of his own unsanctioned experiments, becoming scarecrow.

Instead they pussied out, took all the edge out of it, and settled for a studio approved bore fest that would aim towards the lowest common denominator. I share with the fan theory that the Schumacher films are films within the Burton universe, and in my head lives the film I just described, and quite possibly the biggest missed opportunity in cinematic history.

BDW's Harvey Dent would never have had anything to do with Shreck.

It would have been far better if he was the guy trying to bring Chip Shreck to trial for his family's illicit business dealings, and then hot-head rich-kid Chip throws acid at D.A. Dent and creates Two-Face.

reply

Well that's my point. Perhaps he didn't even realise Shreck was corrupt, nobody else had proof, or perhaps it was in the past. Thus his vilification by the media, the public, and his ousting by his colleagues would drive him insane.

IMO Chip wouldn't of had anything to do with anything illicit, it's quite clear he's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

reply

True about Chip, but that's why he'd be caught, unlike his old man. And that's why he'd have to resort to throwing a vial of acid at his prosecutor.

this movie is on my list of "movies I'd love to make a fan-edit of that makes it darker , but will probably never take the time to make"

reply

It was a good idea up to the "three hour" and "prequel" part... Two things Hollywood would not have done in 1995. But otherwise I liked it.

reply

Could've been better, maybe it wouldn't have. Who knows. Regardless of however flawed it may be, I'm honestly fine with the one we got. Given how disconnected the first two feel to me anyway, I'm not so bothered with the ones for this film. And the things I like most about it, the focus on the Bruce and Dick character stuff, probably would've been dropped or lessened to some degree given Burton's tendency to elaborate the most on the villains. Now I do enjoy the two Burton films to be clear, but I've never had any burning resent over there not being a third one myself.

reply

I agree, I wanted to see him do it just for consistency with the look of the film.

reply

I was about to ask if it was actually a blessing in disguise that Tim Burton never made a third Batman movie:

Maybe so but I liked forever. You cant say it wasnt well done. I hate how people turned on it when it came it out everyone was buying its merchandise and its videos. People supposedly hate on it though it was a massive success and one of the biggest selling of the batman movies. B&R helped make it distance itself. The real sell outs are the fans. If Tim Burtons wouldve been better for sure it wouldnt have been as fun. I cant say I dont love all its Cast. Especially Nicole Kidman. Tim Burton wanted to make something more like Nolans Trilogy and I have my critique on that. An important one is that this is Batmans for kids but he made it Batman Rated R though its a comic book action hero. Not up to my standards. Though Burtons ones had a nice blend for kids and adults more acceptable. Nolan made it terrorist like for grown ups who should be watching more mature stuff. In the real I think Forever had its mind right as it was almost soley for kids and thats what batman is really for. Yet fun, comediate, and full of toys for the kids to have fun. It was never that serious and still had a dark side, romantic side, and a serious side for the kids to understand and enjoy.

reply

I heard that the original script for Batman Forever (written while Tim Burton was still possibly going to direct it) was much more in line with the tone of the '89 film (it even ended with the Danny Elfman score soaring, the camera panning up the side of one of those expressionistic Gotham skyscrapers, the Bat signal glowing like a moon off the clouds, Batman silhouetted in front, cape billowing in the breeze, and Robin stepping up beside him). It just needed a pass or two more by the writers to really tighten it up. Unfortunately, it was rewritten by Akiva Goldsman. And not in the right direction.

reply

Sounds interesting but I still liked how Batman Forever turned out.
Had Burton continued on that line of the Batman movies I'm sure it would've been better but then I wouldnt had the pleasure to enjoy Batman Forever and One thing I liked about Batman Forever that a lot of adults bash is that it goes back to it being focused on the kids and not as Dark as the previous. Batman is a kids comic book hero not a real one for adults.

reply

Tim Burton just needed his crazier ideas and imagination to be reigned in. I think that Batman Returns suffered and wasn't as tightly focused as the 1989 movie because of how off-the-wall (the 1989 movie was more of an updated version of a crime noir-film instead of the twisted, dark fairy tale that Returns turned out to be) it tended to get. What I didn't like about Returns when compared to the '89 films was that it was way too vulgar, incoherent, moody and bitter.

reply

On the contrary that is why I like Returns over the Bat because it is a Dark Fairy Tale which is what I personally like.
I have nothing against Burton but his later work really suffered compared to his great earlier work. Dont know why the studios stop trusting him since he was bringing the cash cow and making classic's left and right. Now a shadow of what he once was. Despite those critics those are probably the same reasons why I like the film. I really liked Catwoman probably my favorite superhero of all time played beautifully. You might not like this but I consider the Penguin the batman villian of all-time in the batman movies. I think this is Devito's best work and so good he should have won the Oscar. Yes I do like the original but I found the sequel so much more exaggerated, fun, and funny. More my style. A subtle sly I also like that despite all these monster character's Batman still takes over the film despite not having the better work or being as much.
I think the only thing I didnt like was that he either didnt end up with Catwoman or that she doesn't appear in the sequel.

reply

Akiva Goldsman is not really the best writer. He won an
Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, but there is a lot of mediocre stuff he's known for. And I think it's quite clear from this movie, he was going to be inspired to write more unnecassary puns, more kiddie stuff and what not. And let's not forget that Batman & Robin is really just a rehash of this movie.
