Coover Story...

Has anybody read the short story by Robert Coover that inspired the movie? It's way better than the film because it's more concise and slightly more ambiguous. It was a totally pioneering story with it's multiple third person point of view and extremely well crafted. But this movie butchered it.

i love coover's story and have always wondered when i see this film at blockbuster if it is connected with the story. From the sound of it, though, i wont be too pleased with the film adaptation.

Actually, I was surprised to see that the movie was based on the story, which I read back in the 70s, for a class. I wrote an essay in which I'd noted the movie-like, quick-cut quality of the story, which is chopped up into short paragraphs, to emphasize the multiple points of view.

Credit the moviemakers with producing something other than a bland blockbuster effort: this'd never get made today, with everybody lining up for a shot @the next J.K. Rowling pest seller.

I read the story in college and loved it. There was no way it could have worked as a movie though with the constantly changing POVs. They tried here but it just didn't work.

That is exactly what's missing here--without the ambiguity, it's not nearly as arresting. I don't like the fact that when the movie ends, I'm absolutely sure what happened. Additionally, the focus on the female through the male gaze is watered down; that was the biggest thing I took away from the story when I first read it in college.

The short story sounds interesting.

Well, that's a given. Alicia was perfectly casted, but everything else about the movie was a silly mess.
