Interesting Concept, Not Very Well Done

This was Guy Ferland's first job as a director, so I'll cut him a break here, especially since he has gone on to direct a lot of episodes of some very good TV shows. But while the concept here was very interesting, it just didn't seem to work.

The idea of seeing the fantasies of various men and boys about the babysitter was unique and interesting. I think the fantasies of the wife toward her friend's husband was distracting and out of place, though. They should have stuck with the fantasies regarding the babysitter only, in my opinion. A nip slip or two from Alicia Silverstone would have helped, too. I know she has small breasts, and didn't want to give us full frontal, but a little more tease would have gone a long way.

The ending was disappointing, too. Part of it was too much like one of the fantasies; it shouldn't have gone that way. While seeing the bad guy get it was satisfying, the writer didn't seem to know how to end the movie. So the final shot seemed kind of tacked on, like they didn't know what else to do with it.

The short story this was based on is available on Amazon. I may check it out to see how Robert Coover handled the theme.

The movie is different from Coover's short story http://social.rollins.edu/wpsites/sexwarandplague/files/2012/07/coover-babysitter.pdf, which was mainly a vehicle for an idea about how stories could take different plot lines. It's not really better or worse, because it's apples and oranges.

The movie is about The Male Gaze. It's about how males of all ages react to a beautiful, nubile young woman who's just trying to babysit some kids, and not completely aware of her affect on males, and hence indifferent to it.

The end of the movie is perfect, the last line sums up the entire proceedings of the evening.
