Really what 17 year old would date a 13 year old?

The 90s weren't a different time. No normal 17 year old boy is going to date or wait for someone who is probably still going through puberty.

When I was 13 I couldn't even comprehend wanting to date an older guy unless it was Justin Timberlake (yeah, it was 2003). Boys my age were cute enough for me, any older guys we looked at we just tried to get their attention by doing childish teen stuff and it usually made them laugh and that was it.

I'm sure it happens rarely, but it does seem a little weird. In your teens/developmental years, a few years' age difference means a heck of a lot more than it will after you both pass 20. I don't recall any examples of such a relationship from my own schools.

Frankly, I never even considered dating until college. High school was more than full enough of good times with friends, classwork, extracurricular activities, and personal hobbies that I doubt I would've seriously gone out with anybody even if I'd been especially interested in someone. During elementary school I flirted a bit with a certain boy, but it was nothing serious, just little-kid stuff. And when I finally did hit an age where guys were of real interest, from the start I wasn't very attracted to many around my own age...I liked actors and such who happened to be 20-40 years older than me! XD Yeah, sometimes I'd get a little flirty too, but again, nothing that was going to start a relationship. ;p And at 13? I surely wasn't looking at the 17-year-olds.

I thought that
A. He didn't know she was 13 (she lied about her age)
B. She was from New York City (and supposedly therefore more "sophisticated" than her other friends)
C. In small towns this probably happens more often when the dating pool is smaller.
D. He's European
E. Yeah, it's still gross because 17 are usually "doing it" already (national average of virginity loss is 16.7 years old, last time I checked)

13??? 13?!???!?

Clearly everyone that has commented on this issue agrees that it was an abomination. However, as sickening as it may be to many, I don't think THEIR relationship was unrealistic or even weird. I mean, the girl was clearly into the European lad, and the European lad (who was smitten with her) didn't know she was 13. So, they started dating and genuinely fell for each other.

You know, methinks their relationship shouldn't be so frowned upon...

Nah, even if he didn't know he was dating someone 4 years younger than him (at first), the 17 year old was a full blown pervert who deserved to be beaten! Not really. 

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Lol, I'm watching this with my daughter and seriously... The creepiest part was when he says "I'm coming back next summer" and she says "I'll be 14" then they kiss. Gross. Plus, that would make him 18. And that's illegal. Wtf.

I have an even bigger scoop for you -- Bre Blair ('Stacey') was 14 at the time of filming, and Christian Oliver ('Luca') was 22. 

But, yeah, I've also wondered why the filmmakers didn't pick up on the fact that, even though Stacey would be 14 the following summer, then that makes Luca 18, since he's 17 in the movie. 

Incidentally, my brother-in-law's brother started dating his girlfriend (now wife) when she was 13 and he 17, so it happens. They wed at 17 and 21 and are still married nearly 20 years later, with three daughters, ages 7-15.
