Help

I would like to start out by saying that I enjoyed the movie, mainly becuase of all the great actors in it. The only thing is I never quite understood what Stella's aunt and uncle were telling O'Hara that caused him to end up like he did. I was wondering if anybody could tell me. Thanks!

Haha, OK, I'm an Alan Rickman fan, so I watched it over and over again until I figured it out.

Stella's aunt and uncle were talking about Stella's mom, saying she gave birth to Stella but wasn't a good mother and now they think she's in America, and then Stella's aunt turns over a picture of Stella's mom and PL O'Hara is shocked to find out he knows this woman (if you remember, earlier in the movie, he told that one woman that he knows stella, when actually he was thinking of Stella's mother) And then PL goes into this thing about how he thought he had a son. But now he realizes he had a daughter - Stella.

Ok, sick, ik, he was gettin' it on with his daughter...not something many people want to think about...

Umm...did that explain it? I'm afraid it still might be a bit confusing.

Thanks so much for your help. I understand it now. My first reaction was boy, isn't that sick. Well thanks again! :)

Not sick, sad. He wouldn't have done it if he'd known.

How did Meredith know bout PL and Stella bein father and daughter?? that's what i'm confused about...or are you just assuming that he knew

Yes, I would like to know the answer to that too! How did Meredith know?

reply

I didn't think Meredith did know they were father and daughter, but he knew that PL and Stella were having an affair and that Stella was underage. He used this knowledge to his advantage because he wanted to have the upper-hand on PL who he had a long running feud with.

PL had took the moral high-ground with Meredith because of his homosexual relationship with a young man and Meredith was angry at his hypocrisy. He wanted Stella's uncle to discover the affair and PL to get into trouble over it (he would then lose his moral high-ground and his status as 'favourite' in the theatre). I think it was as simple as that, we have to remember the story is set in simpler times (pre-pill) when premarital sex was frowned upon - an older man seducing a young girl would have been a very big scandal.
