i thought Banderas really carried this movie

Stallone was quite lifeless, but Banderas did a fantastic job of injecting his character with a lot of energy and intensity.

This movie is worth watching, becuase Banderas was having a good time, and it showed. I had a fun time watching his character.

I agree I almost cried when Stallone killed him

With out him this movie would have sucked more then "Stop or my Mom Will Shoot"

reply

Oh good so it's not just me being all fangirly by thinking the same thing! The film would have been better if the good guys had been a little more enthusiastic!

reply

Yea, me too! They could have just leave the two rivals alone after killing the third person!

I absolutely agree. I watch it whenever it's on just to see Banderas working those guns, chit-chatting with Stallone. His little mannerisms, even the way he handled objects (the gift-wrapped box, the hood of the cars, the jasmin perfume) all showed character.

Stallone, on the other hand, was droopy-eyed and dull. And I like the guy!

I don't blame Stallone, who can't be expected to do anything better. I don't blame Julianne Moore, who's good-God!-gorgeous. The script was flaccid and flabby.

(Side note: the Wachowski brothers wrote the original. Can they write a genuine love story?)

The movie still rocks. It's one of those movies where the audience has to really invest more thought than the filmmakers did.

"The script was flaccid and flabby."

Judging by the hotel scene where Stallone sleeps On The Floor instead of in bed with Julianne Moore, that's not the only thing that was flaccid.

I kinda thought that Rath was supposed to be all "droopy-eyed and dull". Isn't that his character? He's a pro. He never lets his emotions get the better of him. Miguel obviously does.

I don't know, just my take.

I don't think that Stallone was "droopy-eyed and dull" in the movie, nor was that part of the character. He'd have the audience falling to sleep and caring about him if he were. Yep, he's a pro, although, because he didn't kill Electra, you could argue that he let his emotions get the better of him, too.

Miquel, while a wild, emotional guy, is also a professional, and when he's on a job, he's really pretty cool and keeps his emotions in check. I love the scene when he's in the hotel room over-looking the bank, waiting for Rath for hours. It's right near closing time, people start coming out and Miquel loses it, starts panicking. But then he laughs at himself, takes a few deep breaths and goes perfectly still.

I think that Stallone carries the movie, essencially, but Banderas keeps the movie interesting and fun because it does tend to go a bit flat when he not on the screen. Banderas brings a lot of humor and unpredictability in his performance. I suppose some other actor could have pulled off the same role, but it wouldn't have been the same character, with the unintimidatable Banderas physicality and comic times. And, well, amazing good looks!

Banderas made this movie worthwhile.

Stallone isn't a great actor, he just seems to have his moments like Rocky, Rocky Balboa, Cop Land, the end of First Blood.

reply

Yeah, the ending had me, too. I really didn't want Banderas to die =(

Stallone's character was written to be a "veteran" assassin from the 70's and 80's who is about to retire whereas Banderas' character reflected more of the 90's. It was somewhat a passing of the baton from Nikolai Tashlinkov to Stallone to Banderas. Sean Connery was the prime candidate for Stallone's role but couldn't take it as he had other movies in production at the time.

I don't think that, Sylvester Stallone act naturally and realistic (very good acting) in my vision, for other hand, Antonio Banderas OVERACTTTTTTTTT...

reply

I thought that Stallone looked "sleeply" simply because he was at the end of his career, on the brink of retirement. Miguel was at the start of his career, full of energy and enthusiasm. And Stallone's "sleepiness" works great as a contrast to Banderas and consequently to both characters.

I think it's a pity that Miguel died in the end. I SO much wished that their teaming up would last longer. They teamed up to kill their common enemy, Rath explicitly stated that it was his last job, that he would retire and that Miguel could be No.1 from now on (and he did so while holding him point blank). At that point it would really have been a better ending if they agreed on that. (it would also have more possibilities open for a sequel).

reply

I agree. Stallone was weary. He wanted to retire, but the tempting offers just kept coming in. It's like some addictive...thing. It seemed like an "I swear this is the last time, then I'm done. Seriously." thing.

Oh, and yes. Antonio Banderas kicked a LOT of ass in this movie. I've never really been a fan of him at all, and was almost hesitant to check out this flick because he was in it. But I love assassin/hitman type flicks, so I thought "what the hell."

Turned out to be a good decision!

As much as I like Sly, Banderas was the star of this movie imho..
