What's the point of the chess with Nikolai in the NY Times?

Why\how did he go back and forth with Nikolai in the New York Time like that? That's what I don't get.... I imagine Nikolai ran away and then he decided to communicate with Rath through the newspaper to maintain his identity?

Do we ever get a reason for it? It doesn't really make any sense.
