Should have been great....but sadly, wasn't

I remember when I saw the trailer for this movie I was certain that it was going to be a smash hit. Stallone and Banderas going head-to-head. But sadly, this movie turned out to be a damp squib.

To start with, the whole tone of the movie was wrong. It was about two assassins so it should have been dark, gritty and edgy but instead it was too light in tone.

Banderas characterization was good. The crazy but dangerous new assassin who wants to desperately prove that he is the best at all cost. Stallone's character on the other hand was too "goody-two-shoes" for an assassin. He should have been more serious with shades of greys. Something like his character in "The Specialist", cold and calculative. Julianne Moore's character was completely wrong as well. Her relationship with Stallone should have been more like a mouse in a cat's grasp. She should have been in fear of the assassin, trying to escape any chance that she got. Instead she is depicted as an annoying brat with a cat and Stallone is like the tolerant parent.

The climax was pretty dull too. There should have been an intense showdown between Stallone and Banderas, each showcasing his skills.

"I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!"

Could have been reasonable ... but sadly wasn't.

I agree, probably the best element of the movie.
Instead she is depicted as an annoying brat with a cat ...
I just wanted either hit man to off her and get her out of the film. The film fully outstays its welcome too, by a good 25 - 30 minutes.

I wonder how different the movie might have been if they'd stuck to filming the original Wachowski script. IMO, it's madness to pay $1 million for a script and then throw it out the window.🐭

I liked the interjection of dark humor (the cab scene was perfection) and Antonio's near manic performance. However, while Moore brought vulnerability into her character, she and Stallone had no chemistry together, which was sad because their character's connection was a pretty important part of the film and in explaning Wrath's turnabout.
