I'm pretty sure that when the narrator said that the ex-priest went to the city with his 12 disciples to become a social worker, it was a little tongue in cheek. The twelve "disciples" refer to Letta's twelve children. (I guess there were thirteen, actually, but one of them was already grown and had a child with Thérèse by the time Letta died.) At least, that's how I heard it.
