Interesting movie, oddball, outcast, underdog overcoming, revenge of the nerds, spiritual, atheist. The sex scenes are story appropriate. The theme I got out of this is, a life well lived on ones own terms is the best revenge, traditions be damns.
Curious, what do native Dutch speakers think of this movie? I always wonder about foreign films, that because of my english language point of view, how much I'm missing in translation.
My mother grew up in the Netherlands before coming to the US. All I can say is that I have seen it over ten times as it was one of her favorite movies

I liked it...not sure if it is typically Dutch though. I am Dutch and sometimes this movie looked more Belgian than Dutch.
Dutch movies tend to be harsher...less elegant..
If this is the way the Dutch are perceived abroad I would be more than happy..I know very well though that his is not the case..

I've yet to see a good Dutch film.
Acting is always bad, story can be ok.
If you're into Dutch films, check out 'Zusje', it's the only ok Dutch film I've seen so far.
