Excellent film but no subs!

ANGELA is an excellent indie film with two incredible girls but the lack of sub-titles really dampened my enjoyment of the movie. I always turn the sub-titles on so I don't miss any of the dialogue, especially important with any indie film or any Marlon Brando movie...I have no idea why directors allowed him to mumble as much as he did. Anyway, very sad with an oddly told story.

I agree about the unfortunate lack of subtitles. I never watch a movie the first time with subtitles on, but if the sound is bad or I like the movie enough, I often turn them on for a second viewing.

But the main reason I like subtitles is for watching a movie with a commentary track playing. I like to know what the characters are saying as I listen to the commentary, so I can better understand it all. Listening to a commentary track without being able to understand the dialog at the same time is a drag.

I watch every film with the subtitles turned on if they're available. I appreciate good writing and that way I never miss a line.

I know what you mean! The sound on this one was excellent, so I didn't need them. It is annoying when films don't have subs and then the sound is poor and the accents thick and you miss dialogue and a lot of nuances of the film.

Are you on drugs by any chance?

reply

Not that I'm at all opposed to good drugs, but, no, I'm just a little hard of hearing.

Too many rock concerts growing up? That's my deal, I always thought it was sorta funny walking out afterwords and it felt like someone had turned the treble to -8. At 45 I'm now paying for that teenage ignorance. They make special earplugs for concerts wish I'd used them. See Amazon and search concert earplugs.

I can get by without subs, just barely but even if they're not needed I still prefer them on. Hearing and reading at the same time cements the plot in my head better.

I think cinematographers and directors might be upset by the idea unnecesarily imposing text over their carefully framed scenes. If the movie is going to be seen by a foreign audience, there's no alternative, but you're an American viewing an English language movie, hey, get a hearing aid or turn up the sound!! Jeez....
