'No Father, No Mother, No Uncle Sam'

Years ago, PBS ran a broadcast of this British program about WWII romances between African-American GIs and English women. The program also included the stories of the adult children born of these relationships (at the time, they were 40-somethings; by now they should be nearing retirement age).

It would be great if someday this program ("No Father, No Mother, No Uncle Sam")and this movie ("The Affair") were released together as a special DVD collection. I really enjoy watching a historical documentary followed by a movie on the subject. Like if you watched a National Geographic program about the Titanic, followed by the 1997 movie.

"The Affair" was a great film, underrated as many films are. Another sourece on the subject is the book "When Jim Crow Met John Bull: Black American Soldiers in WWII Britain."

Thanks for the info!

I heard of that documentary and hope to get a DVD copy. I read the book When Jim Crow Met John Bull:Black American Soldiers during WWII Britain and loved it.

I've seen that book before and would like to read it sometime. But as far as that documentary, I seriously doubt it is available on DVD anywhere. It came out in the 1980s, I believe, though this review (see attached below) is dated 1990. The Anglo-British people in the prgram looked to be 40-ish, so it was sometime in the 1980s. If they are still alive, they are around retirement age now. And I'm sure their children and grandchildren would have great stories.

I was disappointed that my Public TV station did not show that documentary if I did I would had ordered the VHS verson. Hope to reach the director and producer soon. There are a few movies of Blacks in WWII.

I saw another film called The File on Jill Hatch that was shown on PBS' American Playhouse in 1983. It was about a Afro-English girl from a Black US soldier and English mother who went to England and got involved in the Brixton riots.

I heard something about that documentary. I hope it is on DVD since as a Black american I love to learn more of the Afro-English children of Black US Soldiers in WWII.

If you're going to search for it you should try www.worldcat.org and see if you can get it through interlibrary loan.
