Why did the townspeople mock Tom/Muff but believe Injun Joe?

That makes no sense whatsoever.
Tom might have been somewhat of a delinquent brat, and Muff a drunk that didn't amount to much. But wasn't Injun Joe well known for being a liar, thief, and even reputed murderer BEFORE he framed Muff?

Despite their flaws Tom and Muff actually seem to be nice and decent people.
Both of them seemed to get along great with people at times.
But everyone seemed to stay clear of Joe because of fear. But yet everyone took his testimony as truth at once, and even wanted to hang Muff on the spot.

well, you have answered that question, cause tom sawyer is a trouble maker and muff potter is the town drunk, and pretty much injun joe comes into town and nobody never heard of the guys reputation except for huck who knew about joe. you got to remember no internet, and not a lot of accountability for the news to report about injun joe. so you have a man who wonders into town and makes up and tells he saw what muff potter did, and also people know the town doc so with his murder and being muff in the wrong place in the wrong time to cover up the fact that doc was looking for the treasure and to cover up what really happened

I remember no one believed Muff Potter when he insisted on his innocence, but when was Tom mocked?

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, but he certainly wasn't mocked for testifying.
