Indeed, a bit of amusing hamminess by Eric Schweig. I wonder who wrote that line in the screenplay--maybe Stephen Sommers or some other guy.

"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."

It creeped me out, and still does. But does have this tinge of funniness to it!
