A Bad Writing Problem in Seasons 2-3 (Namely Callisto)

I know that seasons 2-3 are the Golden Age of Xena, and are both literally the best seasons of the entire series (some lump 4 in there too as well), but I noticed a bad writing problem specifically when dealing with Callisto.

When Callisto became a goddess that had it's pros & it's cons, but one of it's most glaring cons was quite evident in Goddess Callisto's premiere episode, how is Xena supposed to take down a God? I don't care if Xena is the strongest warrior woman on the planet with many skills, it is impossible for her to take down a god. This is when the writing had got a little bad for me. The writers had to resort to silly stuff such as trapping a Goddess in a volcano, in a cave, under piles of rocks, etc. It's just so laughable on so many levels.

Xena & Callisto's fights were better when both of them were on the same level. It was actually interesting to see who would win the match (yeah Xena would win because she's the title character, but Callisto is more than capable of actually taking her down). When Callisto became a goddess however their battles became a joke. Mortal Callisto always had plenty of chances to kill Xena, and now as a goddess it was actually ridiculously easy for her to kill Xena.

While I had actually liked that Callisto became a goddess it had created a lot of problems for the writers to deal with in how to handle her character now. They probably should've saved off from making Callisto a goddess until season 5 when Xena had her god-killing powers.

That's why they created failsafe concepts to guard against normally unkillable foes like gods. Jerkules killed Zeus with the Ribs of Cronos, Xena went after Ares with the Dagger of Helios, the Hind's Blood dagger.......(what a pain in the ass that thing was!)

In "a Necessary Evil" with Velasca the explanation was that the ruins by that lava pit wound bind the powers of a god, that's how Callisto and Velasca were both successfully trapped......until Hope came along and freed the twisted sister lol.

As far as being trapped in a cave, well I guess that depends on how powerful the god is. I'm just speculating here since it was never explained in the show or out of it. In that same episode, Callisto was riddled with a gazillion arrows and was able to expel them from her body with her godly powers.

I guess she couldn't tunnel through solid rock. I'm willing to bet inferior godlings like Strife wouldn't have the power necessary to free themselves from that predicament either. Over time Callisto did become stronger and was able to free herself from that other world all on her own.

Enough with the "Jerkules" crap. This is the second time I've seen you say that. It's not funny, it's immature (not to mention annoying) and messes up everyone's attempts at having a serious conversation.

The writing worked in the fact that Callisto never wanted Xena dead, she wanted her to suffer like she did by losing close ones. Additionally, Xena had the tactical combat skills to know that Callisto would be crazy and rageful enough to use up her powers and get drained enough that a tumble of rocks would hold her down for some time. But I did not like the explanation given for Callisto and Valasca being trapped in the lava pit -- that was flimsy at best.

At first it sounded like Xena was saying "runes" so I assumed "ok magical runes etched in the canyon walls that bind the powers of a god". But why would "ruins" have the same effect? I never understood that.

These are actually some reason why Hudson wasn't as keen on playing Calisto as much after she became a god. She basically said she became this all powerful god yet always seemed to be undone by some random pile of rocks haha. All this power, yet some misplaced rocks knock her down and out for some time until it's plot relevant to bring her back into the fight. Plus, like the writers figured out near the end of season three, there wasn't much more to do with her character without continuing to diminish her.

I will admit to her being my favorite bad guy in the Xenaverse, and I particularly liked her final arc in the series. With all that said, I'm glad they stopped using her because she was becoming far too unfocused as a character. And there always is that problem with making a character so powerful you have to keep coming up with ways and reasons as to why they don't just kill their foes and call it a day.

Neither did I. It always came off as silly to me. Unless the rocks were special, divine, hinds blood-esque rocks, no random, ordinary rocks should "hold" a god.

They honestly should have kept her as a immortal
nothing really justified giving her God powers. And if she she was only immortal it wouldn't be so weird for her to be stopped by falling rocks.

This was a problem whenever Xena went up against gods. Even with her god-killing powers the gods were still reality warpers. The "Twilight of the Olympians" arc is terrible for many reasons including this. Gods can turn invisible and interact with things when invisible, teleport, and remotely view Xena. Xena had to sleep eventually and could not see invisible gods. So even if she was a better fighter she can not match all of powers of a god. Same with Hercules really except he at least benefited from a few extra powers and the protection of Zeus.

Greek mythology was a collection of stories made over the centuries from different regions. Not a single show made over a short span of time by writers who could draw upon what came before.

And even in the Greek myths, the gods (namely Ares) only lost to mortals when they tried confronting them on a physical level and oven the mortal needed either the aid of another god or had to be a demigod themselves. In pure power no mortal including Hercules was a match for a god. Even Hercules from Hercules: TLJ could not defeat gods who utilized their full power. Ares always pulled his punches due to fear of Zeus.
