What was the live action show like?

I was a big fan of the comics and the cartoon, and I remember when I heard about the live-action show I just cringed and assumed it would be terrible. I'm afraid I never gave it a fair chance at all, but at the time I was sure it would be a horrible disaster as so many live-action shows/movies based on comics and cartoons (and video games) often are.

I have the cartoons queued up on Netflix and the live action series is on Netflix too, but just the picture on the front of the box is making me wince. I'm trying not to be biased, but it looks terrible. Is it even worth a look-see? I'd rather ask fans of the comics and cartoon what they think, rather than go to the live-action version board and ask there, where they'd likely be biased and all say it's good.

It was more of a sitcom that just happened to feature superheroes, but it was still funny. One of the best episodes was the trial.

reply

Well it's on Netflix for watching instantly, I might as well take the plunge. In fact I was just queueing ...queing?... it up. I'm actually kinda hoping I like it, but, well I'll 'report back' after the fact.

Its funny in distinctly different way than the animated version. Its more adult in tone, I doubt kids would like it as much as the animated version. Patrick Warburton is awesome as the Tick. The other characters are somewhat less so. I find it particularly annoying that American Maid is replaced with the wimpy Captain Liberty. But the episode where she adopts the dog is gold.

I loved the live action series. All the actors were awesome and the show had a lot of potential for being even better than the nine episodes it got, all of which had me laughing and thinking the characters were fun and entertaining.

I thought the show was great although from the start I was pretty sure it wouldn't make it on network TV. I thought Patrick Warburton was simply awesome as The Tick. Liz Vassey's Captain Liberty was much hotter than the animated American Maid, who probably was made (no pun intended) for the children in the audience.

It was pretty good. I agree, it looked from the start like it wouldn't survive very long on network TV. I wonder if it would have fared any better on Adult Swim? They have aired such awful live-action shows, The Tick is 5 thousand times better than "Children's Hospital" and that other garbage that is supposed to be funny...

I've never watched Adult Swim but I agree that the live action version of The Tick probably would have faired better on a small, speciality network than on one of the broadcast networks. I'm frankly surprised that one of the broadcast networks would even try it, but Fox used to take risks on some pretty non-standard fare. I wonder if even X-Files would survive today?

reply

Well, Fox had to take risks to attract an audience. Once they had it, they settled into the same routine as the Big 3 networks.

The live action Tick is worth watching for Batmanuel alone. Nestor Carbonel was hilarious in the role. All in all, the live action series is just as successful in translating the genius of the comics to television. It just did it in a different manner. The live action show is more of a character study, while the cartoon was more plot driven.
