Why TNG still looks better than Voyager ?

Putting the HD remastering of TNG aside I've been watching the show and I'm really puzzled why a show that's made years later look completely terrible compared to TNG.

I know they started with the darker atmosphere for DS9/VOY but Voyager episodes filming quality looks completely terrible today did they use cheaper equipment and material for the show ?

Even VHS copies or TNG/TOS look better in comparison !

This article will answer that question for you in great detail:

I hope that answers your question!

They did post-production on interlaced NTSC signal masters what kind of idiots do that in the professional world even in the 80s many shows did post-production on film only the copies that were distributed to broadcasters were scanned for NTSC TV the second hand masters were still required to be on film.

I guess it all goes around the budget and how quickly they wanted to finish post-production.

Babylon 5 also suffer from this issue considering all the post-production was done on analog [Video Toaster on Amiga !!]

Are you DISSING the awesome Amiga computer??

reply

What ! No... Amiga was lights years ahead of it's time.

I used the Amiga back in the 1980s, who even remembers Video Toaster today :)

I'm sure I read that article years ago. Reading the technical specification page on IMDb helps too.

It was a waste of money to film 35mm with SD video editing. 16mm is common in Europe. SD video tape switched from composite to digital at some point.

Stargate SG-1 started with 16mm, then 35mm and finally HD cameras and editing.

I know they intended for these shows to be dark, but that's why they aren't that rewatchable to me. I've never seen one episode of DS9 because the pre-release trailers were so dark.

I prefer the well-lit ships of TOS and TNG. The best episodes of Voyager and Enterprise were those that took place off ship.

That’s a shame really, as DS9 may be one of the best of all the series. When it’s good, it’s really excellent.

Sigh.. I may have to watch it now...

Are all the shows filmed in that dark sardine can?

reply

Helps to like Avery Brooks.
He is the calm, smooth-toned center of DS9.

reply

Actually not only ships even TNG episode that were filmed in dark places were better lit than DS9/VOY maybe they were stingy with the lighting costs LOL

reply

Maybe! Honestly, I'm sure the look was intentional but it's just depressing. I'll have to dry DS9 at some point on Jamfo's say-so.

Now I got the opposite opinion. I've been watching them on HM&M. Voyager follows TNG and I have to say the quality of the episodes video and sound are much better. Granted, I realize they've benefited from fifteen years of improvement on the methods.

you are right.

As far as I'm concerned, a lot of lighting actually DATES shows badly, compared to realistic lighting. TOS is extremely dated, and TNG is fast heading down that route, too.

I think REAL command centers don't have such excess lighting, and what's the point, when all of the control interfaces are lit up anyway? DS9's Cardassian station has similar touchscreen tech to the Federation, so why do you need extra lighting, and in such a large open space? Voyager, same argument. Even Enterprise did the same thing.
