Hated Neelix

Seriously I did. He was annoying as hell and I found it beyond belief he knew the whole quadrant by himself. In the episode in the first season where he is told he is going to die?

I was hoping they got rid of the character. Hated him.

Neelix was an annoying character but then again I think he was meant to be. But based off of the first episode, I expected his character to be much more like Quark instead of Janeway's "pet telaxian" as Q described him. His relationship with Kes never made sense. The fact that he came into voyager with limited technology yet knew all about the delta quadrant made no sense. And his severe lack of delta quadrant knowledge in later seasons also made no sense seeing as how Janeway kept him on as an advisor in most of the bridge crew meetings.

Yes, Neelix was annoying, and cringe-worthy most times, especially when he went barefoot that one time and tried dancing. But his backstory was okay. He was knowledgeable about his sector of the Delta Quadrant, but not the entire quadrant. Janeway kept him on as an ambassador, not a guide or advisor.

When I first watched the show, I hated Neelix. Now that I'm watching it again years later, I don't hate him, but I still find him annoying. In fact, I find him to be acceptable at times.

I realize Neelix had that ambassador title, but he never actually did anything. Sure they talked about him doing some off camera stuff but Janeway was always the person making first contact or settling disputes. In my opinion, Neelix should've been booted off the ship earlier.

Neelix was still meeting with various alien dignitaries and leaders though, so he did have a role there. If I recall correctly, and this episode should be coming up pretty soon, he is assigned to look after some alien who tries to grope Seven, calling her "Seven of Mine".

He was also the cook, btw.

But I saw him in Year of Hell Pt1 last night, and I found his "humor" role a little out of place. Tuvok had just gone blind, the ship was in shambles, and here comes Neelix asking if the alert voice should say "Intruder Alert" or something more stylish (in his opinion). It was an obvious play at Neelix being "funny" and Tuvok being annoyed, which is usually what's really funny in that scenario, but the timing was bad. Again, recently blinded, the ship's a mess. Is that really the time to be so chipper and goofy?

It was weird too - somewhere in the middle of the show there was an episode where he felt he was about to become useless, because they where going futher than the region of the delta quadrant he knew about. Some episodes later, all this was forgotten, and he still knew something about just about every speices they encountered.

Remember how all 80's cartoons had to have a goofy sidekick character.

Thundercats - Snarf
He-Man - Orko
M.A.S.K - T-Bob
The Real Ghostbusters - Slimed

Well that's Neelix.

I think of him more as a hobbit, the regular folk who moderate between the reader and the fantastically elite wizards and warriors.

Neelix was great when it was cheaper, but lately I find myself using Hulu and Amazon Prime Video more.

One of my favorite Neelix moments was when Voyager was in the middle of a battle with the aliens of the week and Neelix and Kes came in to the Bridge carrying coffee and cookies for the Bridge crew to nibble on.

This is the best Neelix scene in the entire series.

He was supposed to be like the Guinan (Whoopie Goldberg) character from The Next Generation.

That's too bad. I thought his episode, Jetrel, used his character well. When the show unveiled his past, the mysteries revealed a fascinating character I thought. Because he cooked and wanted to offer more than observation duties, spoke a certain way and looked a certain way, was jovial and spirited, made mistakes and would often own up to them, and had some token advice that others actually listened to from time to time. But Tuvok found him obnoxious, too, so you are not alone. I don't dismiss him, though, like you all do.
