Season 5 Ep "Night"....

This episode makes no logical sense. They say they are in the dark because there is no star within 2500 light years.... How does this make sense?

Here on earth we can see light from over 10 billion years ago. We can see galaxies that are hundreds of thousands lights years away.. but no star within 2500 LY makes the universe go dark for them?

How did the premise of this episode make it past the idea stage?!?

No I got that it was a "vortex"... but it's never explained how the "vortex" erased all light in the universe. Were there a 2500 light year vortex in our galaxy it could be seen for millions of light years... the science does not make any sense.
