Time for a Big Screen Remake?

Time for a Big Screen Remake?

What do you thing?

reply

Not a remake but a continuation- 20 years later. What happened to our beloved characters- what is the state of the universe? Did we make peace with the Chigs? Have the Silicates resurfaced? But not a remake!!!

reply

I think either one would work. (Remake or continuation)

Remake argument: Let's face it, not that many people will have seen or remember this series. It's available on DVD, yes, but it's not being syndicated that I know of, so people aren't exposed to constant reruns as with the various Star Trek franchises. It would be possible, with good writers, to do a complete rewrite and yet be faithful to the basic premise of the original series.

Continuation argument: It wouldn't be too hard to insert a quick backstory into the beginning of the movie for anyone who hadn't seen the series. I mean, it's a pretty quick synopsis... Earth is convinced we're alone, and placing the first extrasolar colonies on nearby star systems, unknown aliens attack, and so on... But references could be made to most of the original characters in higher command positions. The main cast could all be commanders, etc. Maybe McQueen could be the Earth president! :) Obviously any movie would need new actors, but this way the story is a continuation rather than a remake.

My only demand: PLEASE get the show a longer, more complex music theme! Ha!

reply

I would love it if they make a movie or even another series. I want to see those characters years later. Maybe this time it could be near the end of the war and McQueen, Hawkes and West dealing with that.

I don't want a remake I generally dislike remakes because end up screwing around with something for no reason.

reply

A remake might have to be the way to go, as a continuation is impossible due to the death of two of the characters in the final episode. Also, since this show is not as well-remembered as Firefly, there might not even be an audience for such an undertaking similar to Serenity.

reply

What two characters? The one one we kinda see is Wang and they could change that if they wanted too. I have read a few fics where he survives and it can be believable. Besides I don't think they should have all the original characters back. In ten or twenty years a few of them would or should have died.

I don't think that people need to have seen the series to enjoy a movie that is a sequel of the show. I think it would be very interesting to see a war movie about the end of a long war and the effects it had on the people in it.

reply

Well, they could just mention the chig war but take the marines further into the future and introduce a new alien threat. Or even have some colony type wars... Maybe paraell something like vietnam or the wars in Iraq / afganistan (since the orginial series was based on WW2 themes).

reply

Agree, a continuation shouldn't be that difficult. The original series left off with the fate of three 58ers unsure and then some (what about the Chig war? Kylen?). This was made to be continued! Let's do it... somebody :-)

reply

Maybe an 'uneasy peace along the border' with the Chigs? Kind of like North Korea or Iran--or maybe the Chigs fragment into factions...actions with 'plausible deniability' along with too much war weariness to make it a all out war...

hmm... been a while off this thread, always nice to see fans sticking up for this show!

Well to add, have a read of this thread:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112173/board/thread/79228091

A remake will be the most easiest option here, simply put rights and so on make a remake cheaper to do, and it offers a 're-boot' to the universe so re-opening, or making new options available to the writing team.

A remake as was mentioned earlier in this thread does mean the chances of one ...um..'frak' up followed by another 'frak' up easy and well an obvious 'going to happen' situation.
A remake of the series, no no no, not in this life time or any other I can think of, seriously no please do not do this.

A remake as a full blow film, yes god please yes!
Larger budget, better access (as a result you would hope) to film tech new cast new crew, (CGI etc etc) in all a better position to start from.

A continuation, has possibility after possibility, but no matter what is one that really has to be managed as if it were you mums best Sunday dinner set.

After 20 years could the old squadron (cast) be engaged to fill a few gaps in the time line to deliver us to the new squadron (cast), well look to other shows that did this to then 'come back' to get your answer.
For the most part it hardly ever works.

Now add in a 20 year gap between each series, well that's gonna be a 20 year gap in the war, a 20 year gap that is explained as ...peace..maybe, truce...possible, but hard to swallow, new race, a common enemy, maybe...
..and well that brings us back to the remake suggestion.

ok, so if a remake then should we compare this with Serenity, it was cut it was good, it got a film.
S:AaB had a series, it was cut, it was good, a film covering the whole original series would work, I see no reason why not other than copyrigts etc....

(Judge) Dredd is getting a remake, War of the Worlds, got one, The day the earth stood still , BSG, so whay not S:AaB, it is worth it!

YES WE NEED A REMAKE!!!!

reply

I'd make a mixture of both: A remake of the key-storylines of the first (with all due respect, there are some episodes/stories, that could be ignored or picked up later), but also an early step forward (maybe after the mid-season) into the events that happened after the end of the original show. And don't forget, that the cliffhanger was not the end the authors had in mind. Therefore I'd suggest to the grab the "essence" of the original season, create a few tense episode with it and than move on.

Further changes I'd apply:
1. Change the title of the show to "Above and Beyond" to attract non-SciFi-folks. If there's "Space" in the title, the people might think "Naaah, not another boring SciFi-show!" (there have been many disappointments lately).

2. Don't create another "The US of A save the day - again"-story. The people outside the US are sick of it. The show should reflect modern wars, modern alliances and how they could look like in the future. If the Chiggs attack Earth in 2063, it will be a world wide alliance, which will fight for the survival of mankind. That necessarily mean, that a squadron has to contain soldiers from the U.S., Europe and Asia. It could be the Wildcards again, but it should be clear, that the U.S. forces are part of alliance (with all the downsides, that could at to the depth and drama of the show).

3. If RDM will be the head behind the remake (there've been rumours): Please leave the religious stuff in the church! A little religion here and there is fine. That's part of our culture. But don't make everything point towards god and/or angels (like in BSG and DS9).

4. The Chiggs should not have an origin on Earth. That's complete nonsense (Like highly-developed humans mingle with prehistoric humans to create a new civilisation! Do you hear me, RDM?).

reply

I don't need a remake, I just need blu ray edition with refreshed video and not necessarily, but new cgi would be very welcome and that two things are somewhat possible because they already did it with star trek, the original series got hd resharpened video and new cgi.

reply

I agree, this show does not need to be "remade", it is still awesome as it stands. The Scifi network really dropped the ball back in 1990 whatever when this show was their highest rated rerun and they did nothing to try to continue it, they could have had a "Battlestar Galactica" type series 6 or so years before they actually made BSG. This goes on my list of one of the biggest TV mistakes ever by it not being continued.

reply

A remake wouldnt be worth watching. Near invariably too much is changed and too much lost to the point it sometimes feels like some unrelated movie with the old title slapped on. Which is exactly what it is in a few cases. So no. Please god no re-make.

Could the series be continued? After a decade? Not likely unfortunately. That sort of thing has to happen within a year or two of the original ending.

reply

Disagreed. FX or Space or Sci-Fi could buy up the original rights, update the CGI and make it all in HD. Re-run it three times in weekly specials during the off season and have two marathons two weeks before the beginning of the new TV season. Start the series off as a continuation of where it left off.

Have General or Admiral McQueen in charge of the military. Have West or whomever in a Colonel type role. Do it how you want.

Don't do an uneasy truce, but have it become an obvious war of attrition. There was a lot of direct comparison to WW 1 and 2 in this series. It would be logical to make a 1984 style conflict between Earth and the Chigs. They could still be fighting 20 years after the fact, with no real explanation as to why they are still fighting, no one really remembering what even started the war. Except for West who would still be looking.

reply

.. a simple and good reason for a continuation.

20years on, McQueen is a very senior military commander...General... I like that a great deal it would work.

West, now a senior commander...yes that could work, 20 years in he is still looking for his lost love...not so sure.
What about looking for answers to why the war (and so his loss) at all?

What about Cooper?
(He is a confirmed survivor)
Why not have him acting as a typical 'tank', but possibly working as West's right hand man?
West and Copper working together to discover why there was a War at all?

There blunt instrument, a new squadron (our new heroes in this story) and possibly a new USS Saratoga - USS Bemis Heights to deliver there investigation!

Why the references?
WW2, battle of the pacific was the basis of SAaB, USS Saratoga, sorry that's obvious and so having a new carrier (USS Bemis Heights) is a direct link to that.

Here's a another suggestion to hep fill the 20 year gap...new enemy.

New enemy is something that to me was always the way to explain why the Chigs had such a military force at all.
"We thought we were alone..." and all that... so why do they have such a War machine, unless they have battled another race prior to becoming aware of us and what we (humans) are capable of?

Sorry, the AI wars and escape does not explain the war machine, the AI escape only explains why the Chigs are so aggressive to us (best defence is attack.

So a continuation.
Uneasy truce
war of attrition
new enemy

I would love to see more from the S:AAB universe. I don't know that we'd see all the original cast back which is unfortunate because the original is so good, but if they did do a remake or continuation I would ideally like to see it in the form of another show.

I don't feel you could really delve into the characters, new or old, well in the shorter format of a film. Man I miss S:AAB.

"That's it man. Game over man. GAME OVER!" ~Pvt. Hudson, Aliens.

As a film it could easily be the franchise that never was. The 58, in spite of everything, were the ones who initiate the peace process by warning the caretaker of the coming battle. They protected a sacred place, albeit unknowingly, and that served as the catalyst. Aerotech was the real enemy and the divisions that could come from a powerful corp(oration) vs a military corp, with alien enemies serving as allies, and a common planetary origin opens the door to a multitude of stories no matter who is cast. And as much as we love the 58, no doubt there were others with significant stories. But again, as the ones whose actions led to the revelations and a certain amount of peace, they should get some kind of honors. Yes, a franchise film series gives you freedom to start fresh, but bring in any living character from the original any time you want.

unless they plan on doing a LOTR type of deal i don't think 90 mins will be enough to tap into the full potential.

i'd prefer them doing a new series with the survivors in returning guest appearance except for James Morrison who is the lead role as General McQueen.

Nathan West could be a officer by now still searching for his girlfriend but has become bitter and is crossing the line both with his own troops and the enemy. you could have his do a scenario where he exterminates entire chiggs settlements.

Cooper Hawkes would again be a grunt after being demoted when he as a tank was blamed for some faillure.Maybe even let him get rescued after being marooned on a planet for a decade and him having learned Chigg language.

You could then introduce a new bunch of rejects who join the conflict after basic training and the launch of the revamped Sarratoga . the conflict has been dragging on for 2 decades with failed peace talks , botched up d-day type of landing and what not. if a world war can last 5 years it isn't hard to believe a universal war could take that long . even in earth's history we have had 100 year wars.

by now humans would have new fighters and tactics but the Chiggs wouldn't have stood still either. since this series had a WWII feeling you could lend a few stories from the history of the carrier Enterprise in the pacific . nearly getting sunk a few times but after some refits the living legend of the fleet.

explain what has happened to their breeding planet , explain why we have common ancentors , work out the AI story arc and the cooperate involvment in the conflict.

this could be band of brothers/the pacific in space but please do not add god/gods into the mix like with the new BSG. i want to cheer when humans get a sort of Miday victory over the Chiggs, i want to root for the Sarratoga getting back to port heavily crippled , i want to yell at my tv when the landing fails. Maybe even see half of earth destroyed by nuclear attacks. don't glorify war , show it like it is , you know the "north and south" of the space age.

and to do that i think a season two/three/fout is needed

reply

Sounds more like 'Wing Commander'--the game NOT the movie....

love to see:

Space above and beyond 20 years later

The Chigg and Mankinds alliance after operation anvil is barely holding on. We spend 2 or 3 episodes on what happened after the last episode then build up to new stuff. Get new ships more then just ONE fighter type hmm make it more like wing commander

reply

new things they REALLY need to add I think:

new space fighters
maybe space bombers /anti-ship space craft
better ground vehicles the only tank we see for mankind is UGLY as sin.
maybe no more multi-tasking marines makem just pilots

reply

Just pilot is booooring. I don't care if it's not realistic. Seeing them day in and day out only in their cockpits would make a boring show. If we have to choose and they can not be "multi tasking", I rather have them as infantrymen. At least then there are more options of where the story could go.

The space fighter's scenes were never S:AAB's strong suit.

reply

Yeah a nice trilogy at the movies would be nice for this series. This movie and Firefly should have never ever been cancelled. I would love to see a sequel to Serenity, but I doubt it will ever happen.
