Who was your favorite character?

Mine was definitely Hawkes.

I watched this show when it was new and I was little. I had a huge crush on Hawkes! I just now watched it again and decided he was still my favorite. I kind of wish there had been more of a romance between He and Vansen, though. Oh well, that's just the girly part of me talking. What about you all?

IMO, Cooper Hawkes was the show. I'll explain below.
Back when this show first came on, I could have sworn all the 58th were Invetros for some reason. I guess it was because I didn't watch an entire episode, only a few minutes here and there, and usually Hawkes and McQueen were being shown.

I remember this show, Sliders, Millenium and X-Files were all on Fox at the same time (95). The good old days.

Nathan West. I like that he's so, well, depressed. Makes him human. Also his quest for his girlfriend and that he never really gives up hope is a nice subplot that makes his character grow.

Stay With the Dead is one of my favourite episodes.

McQueen was the whole show, for me anyway.

I would have to say it is a toss up between Hawkes and McQueen
Hawkes because he had just these little moments when you could tell that dispite his apperance he only had like what 4-5 years of life experiance (sp?)
and McQueen because even though he always had this very tough as nails I could care less about you attitude he cared for all of the 58th plus he had a dry kinda humor that I loved like the whole

"Gee, I always thought is stood for Top Cat" *Giggle snort* LOL

Your boy Elroy.
So sinister, loved him.
Doug Hutchison steals the show (again.)

I loved Hawkes as a girl as well! Watching it again after the DVDs were released I realized that I really like McQueen as well.

Damn and Shane Vansen was like one of my idols growing up... her and Sarah Connor from Terminator 2. They were just like the two most kick-ass women I'd ever seen as a child, and it was awesome!

Hawkes. As someone pointed out Hawkes' outlook on life due to his age "out of the mouths of babes." He had a simplistic view of everything around him. He learned to respect his peers and superiors, but didn't let that get in the way of common sense.

But I still love how McQueen went after Chiggy Von Richtoven.

From "Stardust"

Hawkes: You got a minute?
LTC Klingman: You got a problem with me Lieutenant?
Hawkes (adamant): Yeah!
LTC Klingman (calmly): Have a seat.

Wang, on the other hand, let his thought process be overtaken by professor so and so's pet theory every time a new situation emerged (which incidently got them all killed). Half the episodes I found myself screaming at him because he couldn't simply follow orders, he had to get philosophical on every one of them.

Chiggy von Richthofen, this guy deserves a correct spelling of his name. ;)

A good thread!!

I've read a few polls, and even run the odd one or two about the best or favorite character, Hawkes and McQueen always rank at the top!

My Fav ....well thats a tuff question to be honest!
I did like Wang a great deal liked his morality and affect on the others when he was being a joker, but there were better characters IMO ....... Hawkes and McQueen (odd that LOL)

In the thread there is a youtube link to possible the BEST McQueen/Wang moment in SAaB.

Who recalls the episode where McQueen walks into the Wildcards bunk room, the Wildcards are giggling and trying to cover their faces....

McQueen simply says:
"The cabbage was good wasn't it Hawkes?"

So Ok the scene was missing a greenish mist but.... I'll give my vote to McQueen, just for that single line!

LOL

Hands down, McQueen. That guy was badass.

Vansen is hot.

I totally, whole heartedly agree!
I had such a crush on Hawkes and wish that he and Vansen had got together on the show...or that they had at least built up their relationship a bit more.
Had they gotten a 2nd Season or even more, they probably would have eventually developed some sort of 'thing' between them. The chemistry was undeniable, in my opinion.
I just re-watched the pilot ep. yesterday after not having watched the show since it's original 1st run on t.v. and I'd completely forgotten that Hawkes tried to kiss Vansen (hee!) which was great!
Well, anyways it's totally the my 'girlyness' to want to play matchmaker with two fictional t.v. characters (Hey! It worked for my wanting Sawyer and Kate to get together on 'Lost' and Mulder and Scully on 'The X-Files' (er...sort of...) after years of hoping (many, many years were 'X-Files' was concerned))
Anyways, I stand firm in my belief/gut-instincts that Hawkes and Vansen would have hooked-up eventally had the show been given the chance to continue.
Oh yeah...staying on track with the thread topic...it kinda goes without saying now that I've gushed for several paragraphs but (obviously) Hawkes was my fav. on the show followed closely by Vansen (one of the greatest kick-*ss heriones ever on a t.v. show...she's up there with Scully and Kate for me!)
West was okay...but he's kinda boring...sorta like how I feel about Apollo on the new 'Battlestar Galactica' series..cute, but pretty dull..not a lot of personality, I guess..or not enough for my peculiar tastes anyhow.

Seems to be a lot of people wishing that Hawkes and Vansen had started a bit of a romance. I just watched the series for the second time, I first watched it when I was 12 (11 years ago). Not ashamed to admit the ending had me in tears then, and again on my second viewing at the age of 23!

Right at the end of the final episode, Hawkes says "Now I know what she (Vansen) had to go through every day, I just lost my mother and father (McQueen) on the same day too".

Vansen was a mother figure to Hawkes, would have been a bit weird for a romance to develop there.

And yeah, Hawkes is my favourite charachter, he reminds me of myself. Tough on the outside, but inside he's still a scared kid. The whole invitro thing let the writers develop some interesting relationships around his charachter.

My favourite of the minor charachters was probably the driver of Perly, shame he had little screen time. He was a good insight into how humans deal with loneliness, they should have kept him for that whole episode instead of the British guy with the terrible stereotypical accent.

The actor who played him actually prompted me into watching the series again. I saw him on a repeat of Friends a couple of months ago and thought "Oh he's the crazy tank driver from that sci-fi I watched when I was a kid! Wonder if it's on DVD yet...."

And it was :)

I believe that was because Vansen like McQueen were the protective type. In one of the earlier episodes, Hawkes will tell her that he didn't have a mother but if he did, he would expect her to act like Vansen.

Hawkes wasn't used to protection from strangers. So for him, McQueen and Vansen looking after him indicated parenting. Because he didn't understand that you don't have to be a parent to protect someone. A friend can too.

Agreed. It would have been awkward for Hawkes to hook up with Vansen.

It's as if in the anime "G Gundam," Rain Mikamura was paired with Neo America's Gundam Fighter Chibodee Crocket ("Queen of Spades"). The big problem with that is EVERY G GUNDAM FAN KNOWS THAT DOMON KASSHU AND RAIN MIKAMURA ARE THE "GOLDEN COUPLE" OF THE SERIES!!!

With that said, I see a West/Vansen pair-up more. SMGDH On anybody that dares tread on this very commentary that I just made.

reply

Hi, I am the biggest Vansen/West shipper alive, nice to meet you. :P

reply

So am I.

You know what they say: Great minds think alike.

That aside, the pleasure is all mine. ;-)

BTW Here's another additional set of info for those who didn't catch my drift:

1. Nathan and Domon share the "King of Hearts" codename.

2. Shane rhymes with Rain (I know - very freaky, right?). Both girls also share similar backgrounds and mannerisms. They also take certain degrees of likings towards the primary male leads of the respective universes (i.e. Rain to Domon as Shane to Nathan)

3. Nathan and Domon also experience similar struggles: Domon wants to take revenge against his older brother Kyoji for seemingly stealing the Kasshu family's secret experimental giant mobile fighter - the Ultimate Gundam, which was then "corrupted" in to the Devil/Dark Gundam. Nathan shows contempt towards the idea of his little brother Neil enlisting in the Marines and becoming a member of the Force Recon despite his plea for Neil to stay in college and finish his studies.

I'd have to say West. Probably because he's not a rebel like hawkes and he's not overly gung ho. He's just kind of average guy.

BTW, has anyone here ever seen an anime series called Area 88? West kind of reminds me of Shin Kazama in that series.

And of secondary characters, i kind of like Commodore Ross. I liked his sympathetic yet no nonsence style of command.

reply

Yes, I really enjoyed Area 88, both versions!

Shin and West have a similar demeanor and the way of speaking. Their quiet suffering and being separated from the women they love make them really resemble eachother.

The scene in "The Farthest Man from Home" when West screams Kylen's name when the Chigs took her reminded me of the trailer for Area 88's "Requirements of Wolves" when Shin screams Ryoko's name when his plane is shot down.

reply

Episode for episode I'd go with Hawkes, however I think Kirsten Cloke grew into the role and by mid-season through to the end Vansen was the better character for me.

Amongst the minor characters I wouldn't look any further than Ray Butts.

West kinda reminds me more of Domon Kasshu from "G Gundam." Well, since he and Vansen are my favorites, I, to some degree, liken them to Domon and his faithful partner/eventual lover Rain Mikamura.
